Learn UV printing the practical way. From the surface to the cured print.
Everything here is written in simple English. No chemistry degree needed. PRO TECHnology has been in digital printing since 2011, working with leading UV printer manufacturers, and this guide shares what we have learned across every printing world we work in: pretreatment, flatbed, cylindrical and conical, hybrid, wall and confectionery printing.
Start here: UV printing in plain words
Five minutes of reading. After this, everything else on this page will make sense. This is the general part, and it applies to every UV printing technology, from flatbed to cylindrical to wall printing.
UV ink stays liquid until UV light touches it
The printer drops tiny dots of liquid ink onto the surface. A UV lamp follows right behind and hardens the ink in less than a second. This is called curing. The ink does not soak in. It sits on top as a thin, hard layer. That is why the same technology can print on glass, metal, acrylic, wood, leather and plastic.
The print is only as strong as its grip
Because UV ink sits on top of the surface, it must hold on to it. If the surface is dirty, oily, or too smooth and closed, the ink has nothing to grab. The print may look perfect today and peel next week. Good preparation is not extra work. It is the work.
Our printing worlds, and the brands behind them
Modico + primer partners
Adhesion comes first. Modico systems from Germany combine several pretreatment technologies, including Pyrosil flame and plasma, in a single machine. Primers and UV inks come from Marabu (Germany), IT-Ink (Korea) and Palina Coating (Russia), matched to each material.
Direct Color Systems (DCS)
Flatbed UV LED printers from the USA for flat and rigid materials: glass, metal, acrylic, wood, leather and signage, including raised, textured and ADA Braille printing.
LSINC
Seamless direct printing from the USA on bottles, jars, tumblers, tubes and conical or tapered products. The item turns, the head prints a spiral, and there are practically no passes. No labels, no shrink sleeves, no plates.
wallPen
Direct-to-wall UV printing from Germany. Murals, branded interiors and large wall graphics, printed straight on the wall up to about 4 metres high.
IQDEMY
Hybrid UV printer from Switzerland for unlimited-length material. It takes material up to 20 cm thick and 2.5 m wide, at any length your room allows. Have a 4 metre glass or metal panel that needs printing? Bring it to us.
Imago
Edible printing from Poland, directly on chocolates, cakes, macarons and desserts, using food-grade edible inks. A different world from UV, with its own rules.
The four inks you will hear about
Color ink
Cyan, magenta, yellow and black. These four mix together to make the full picture, just like any color printer.
White ink
The base coat. On dark, clear or metallic surfaces, colors printed alone look weak and see-through. A layer of white underneath makes them bright and solid. White is heavy and settles, so it needs mixing and care.
Clear varnish
A transparent ink. It protects the print, adds gloss or texture, and when printed in many layers it builds raised, embossed effects you can feel.
Primer
Not really an ink. A helper liquid applied before printing. It gives the ink something to grab on hard surfaces like glass and metal. We work with several international primer suppliers: Marabu (Germany), IT-Ink (Korea) and Palina Coating (Russia).
Effects our machines can produce
Raised and embossed print
Layers of varnish or ink stacked on top of each other build height. The result is artwork you can feel with your fingers. Great for logos, luxury packaging and premium finishes.
Gloss or matte finish
The same varnish can look shiny or soft. If the lamp cures it immediately, the surface freezes with a matte feel. If the varnish gets a moment to level out before curing, it turns glossy.
Braille and tactile signage
Precise raised dots and letters for accessible signage. Every DCS model is built for this work, and DCS holds the required ADA certification in the USA. The software has a built-in tool that translates text from many languages into Braille automatically and keeps the correct dot size, shape and spacing, so the file is simply ready to print. The Braille tool is a paid software option.
White ink tricks
Print white behind the artwork on dark bottles. Print white on clear glass for a frosted look. Skip white in some areas so the material shows through the design.
Reverse printing
On transparent materials like acrylic and glass, we can print the artwork mirrored on the back. You look through the material at the print. It looks deep and stays protected.
Variable data
Every piece can be different. Names, numbers, codes, or a unique design on each bottle. Digital printing does not care if piece 1 and piece 500 are different.
A one minute science lesson: surface energy
The water drop test
Put a small drop of clean water on the material. If the drop spreads out flat, the surface has high energy and ink will wet it nicely. If the drop beads up into a tight ball, the surface has low energy. Ink will bead up too, and grip will be poor. Plastics like PE and PP almost always bead up. That is why they need special pretreatment.
What raises surface energy
Cleaning removes oil and dust. Flame, Pyrosil or plasma treatment with our Modico systems changes the surface chemistry itself. A matched primer adds a sticky bridge layer. Each material needs its own recipe, and the Pretreatment & Surfaces tab gives you one for every surface we work with.

The workflow: 8 steps, every job, every time
This is the backbone of good UV printing, on any of our machines. Skipping a step is the number one reason prints fail. The steps are short. Read them all once, then use them as a checklist.
Know your material
Why: the material decides everything that comes after.Do this
- ✓Find out exactly what the material is. Glass, aluminium, acrylic, ABS, PET, wood, leather. Ask the supplier if unsure.
- ✓Check if the surface is coated, painted, lacquered or anodized. A coating changes the recipe completely.
- ✓Do the water drop test from the Start Here tab if the material is new to you.
- ✓Treat every new batch as a new material. Suppliers change coatings without telling anyone.
Avoid this
- ✕Assuming this batch behaves like the last batch.
- ✕Starting production on a material you have never tested.
Clean the surface
Why: ink cannot grip oil, dust or fingerprints.Do this
- ✓Wear clean nitrile gloves. Your fingers leave invisible oil.
- ✓Wipe with 99% isopropyl alcohol, or the cleaner approved for that material, on a fresh lint-free cloth.
- ✓Wipe in one direction and turn the cloth to a clean face often, so the dirt is lifted off instead of moved around. Primer is applied differently, in circular movements. That comes in step 4.
- ✓Let the surface flash off and dry fully before the next step.
- ✓Print soon after cleaning. A cleaned surface picks up dust again fast.
Avoid this
- ✕Household glass sprays. Many contain silicone, and silicone is the enemy of adhesion.
- ✕Touching the print area after cleaning, even with gloves that have touched other things.
- ✕Flooding acrylic with strong solvent. It can craze and crack. Use a mild approved cleaner instead.
Pretreat when the surface needs it
Why: some surfaces are too smooth or too closed for ink alone.Do this
- ✓Glass, ceramics and many metals: use Pyrosil flame treatment. A special gas burns in the flame and leaves an invisible glass-like silicate layer, only nanometres thick, that ink and primer love. Our Modico systems bring Pyrosil, plasma and other pretreatment technologies together in one machine.
- ✓After Pyrosil, apply the primer or print within about 3 to 4 hours. The treated surface loses its power over time.
- ✓Work with dry parts at room temperature. In this climate visible condensation is rare, so there is no need to warm the material. Just do not treat something that has come straight out of cold storage into humid air.
- ✓PE and PP plastics: use flame, corona or plasma treatment. Without it, almost nothing sticks to them.
- ✓Keep the flame moving. Two or three smooth passes. The goal is treatment, not heat.
Avoid this
- ✕Holding the flame in one spot. You will overheat or crack the part.
- ✕Treating a dirty surface. Clean first, then pretreat.
- ✕Pretreating today and printing next week. The effect fades.
Prime when the material calls for it
Why: primer is the bridge between a hard surface and the ink.Do this
- ✓Use the primer matched to your material and your ink chemistry. Glass primer for glass, metal primer for metal. We supply primers from Marabu (Germany), IT-Ink (Korea) and Palina Coating (Russia), and our team will tell you which one fits your machine and job.
- ✓Apply it thinly over the whole area in circular movements, without pressure, using a lint-free cloth, a clean paper towel or a clean cotton pad. Too much primer smears and streaks.
- ✓Respect the flash-off time on the product sheet. Printing on wet primer is as bad as no primer.
- ✓Print within the working window written on the primer instructions.
Avoid this
- ✕Thick puddles of primer. More is not better. Thick primer stays soft and fails.
- ✕Using one primer for every material because it worked once.
- ✕Touching primed areas.
Do this
- ✓Run a nozzle check before the job. A few seconds now save you cleaning, reprinting and money later.
- ✓If the machine has been giving trouble recently, add a colour bar, also called a check bar: a strip of colour printed outside the design area that keeps every nozzle firing from the first piece to the last.
- ✓Set the correct print height above the material. Closer gives sharper dots, but never let the head touch.
- ✓Use a white underbase on dark, clear or metallic surfaces. Shake or circulate white ink before printing, because white settles.
- ✓Print one first piece. Check it fully. Approve it. Then run the batch.
- ✓Match resolution to the job. High detail for logos and small text, faster modes for large flat areas.
Avoid this
- ✕Running a full batch without checking the first piece.
- ✕Printing on warped or loose material. That is how heads get damaged.
- ✕Guessing the height. Measure it or use the machine sensor.
Cure with UV light
Why: an under-cured print looks fine and fails everywhere.Do this
- ✓Check the cure on every new job. The surface should feel hard and dry, with no tack and no smell coming off on your glove.
- ✓Keep the UV lamp glass clean. Ink mist and dust block the light and weaken the cure.
- ✓Slow down or add lamp power for thick layers, heavy white, and raised varnish. Thick ink needs more light.
- ✓Follow the lamp service life in the manual. Old lamps look on but cure weakly.
Avoid this
- ✕Stacking or packing prints that feel even slightly tacky.
- ✕Looking at the UV lamp or defeating the covers. UV light damages eyes and skin.
Protect the print
Why: real life includes hands, alcohol, sun and cleaning cloths.Do this
- ✓Add a clear varnish layer over artwork that will be handled a lot, like bottles, gifts and packaging.
- ✓For perfume work, varnish over the printed artwork is standard practice, because perfume contains alcohol and alcohol attacks unprotected print.
- ✓For outdoor wall prints, ask us about a suitable protective coating. Indoors, wallPen prints can last more than 12 years in good conditions. Outdoors, life depends on sun and weather, and a protective coating extends it.
- ✓Let finished parts rest before hard handling and packing.
Avoid this
- ✕Shipping unprotected print into a harsh use, like a bathroom, a bar, or direct sun.
- ✕Promising outdoor life without knowing the exposure.
Test before you trust
Why: a five minute test protects a whole production run.Do this
- ✓Run the cross-hatch tape test and the alcohol rub test on every new material, coating, batch or primer. Both are explained in the Testing tab.
- ✓For perfume bottles, test with the client's actual perfume on the actual bottle. Nothing else counts.
- ✓Keep an approved golden sample for every repeating job. It settles every future argument.
Avoid this
- ✕Approving a job by eye only. Looks say nothing about grip.
- ✕Testing bottle A and producing on bottle B.
Eight steps. If a print fails, walk back through them. The failed step is almost always in the first four.
Pretreatment and surface preparation, on all surfaces
Adhesion is decided before the first drop of ink. This section covers the pretreatment technologies we supply, and the preparation recipe for every material we print on, from glass and perfume bottles to metal, acrylic, wood and leather. These are the same recipes we use at Sun Studio in Dubai.
Modico pretreatment systems
Modico is all about adhesion. It brings several pretreatment technologies together in a single machine, including Pyrosil flame and plasma, so every surface can be activated and prepared properly before printing. One machine, the right treatment for the job.
About Modico ›Primers and inks, from several suppliers
We do not depend on one primer house. Our primers and UV inks come from Marabu (Germany), IT-Ink (Korea) and Palina Coating (Russia), matched to each material: glass primer for glass, metal primer for metal, and so on. The right primer on a properly treated surface is half the adhesion story. Our team will tell you which one fits your machine, your ink chemistry and your material.
How the two work together
Clean first. Then Modico activates the surface with flame, Pyrosil or plasma. Then the matched primer builds the bridge between the surface and the ink. Then you print and cure. Skip a link in that chain and the chain breaks.
Pick your material
Each material below has its grip level, the preparation recipe, the trap to watch for, and the test to run. These are starting points. Your exact batch always gets a test first.
Glass
GRIP: NEEDS HELPPreparation recipe
- Gloves on. Wipe with 99% IPA on a lint-free cloth. Let it dry.
- Pretreat with Pyrosil flame on the Modico system, or apply the matched glass primer. For demanding jobs, do both: flame first, then primer.
- Apply the primer thinly in circular movements, without pressure. Respect the flash-off time.
- Print within the working window, ideally within a few hours of pretreatment.
Watch out
Bottles and jars often carry an invisible factory coating called cold-end coating. It makes bottles slide on production lines, and it kills adhesion. If a clean-looking bottle keeps failing, this coating is the usual suspect. Pyrosil treatment is the standard answer for it.
Test: cross-hatch tape test, plus an IPA rub. For drinkware, add a soak test. Untreated printed glass is not dishwasher-proof, so set expectations honestly.
Perfume bottles and coated cosmetic bottles
GRIP: TEST EVERYTHINGPreparation recipe
- Start from the coating, not the glass. The quality of the bottle coating decides most of the result.
- Best current practice for matte bottles: buy the bottle already professionally coated in the matte background color. Print only the artwork, branding and details digitally.
- Clean gently with the cleaner approved for that coating. Some coatings dissolve in strong solvent.
- Pretreat or prime as the coating requires, then print, then protect the artwork with clear varnish.
Watch out
Perfume is mostly alcohol, and EDP concentrations are strong. Alcohol attacks unprotected print, and it can attack weak bottle coatings too. Never promise a client that a print is perfume-proof before testing their actual bottle, their coating and their actual perfume together.
Test: cross-hatch, IPA rub, and a real perfume test. Spray the client's own perfume on the printed area, let it sit, then rub. Repeat over days, not minutes. Approve a golden sample with the client.
Metal and aluminium
GRIP: GOOD WHEN CLEANPreparation recipe
- Degrease properly. Metal from the factory carries oils you cannot see. IPA wipe until the cloth comes away clean.
- Anodized aluminium usually prints beautifully after a good clean.
- Bare or polished metal: use the matched metal primer, or Pyrosil plus primer for demanding use.
- Powder-coated metal usually accepts print well. Clean, test, then run.
Watch out
Metal pulls heat away and it also holds heat. A part that has been sitting in the sun or fresh out of a process can be hot enough to change how the ink behaves, so let parts settle to room temperature before printing. Mirror-polished surfaces are the hardest metal case and always need pretreatment.
Test: cross-hatch tape test, then a coin or fingernail scratch along an edge. Edges fail first on metal.
Acrylic
GRIP: FRIENDLYPreparation recipe
- Leave the protective film on until just before printing. It is the best dust cover you will ever get.
- Peel, then remove static dust with an anti-static cloth or ionizing gun. Acrylic attracts dust like a magnet.
- Clean with a mild approved cleaner. Go easy with strong solvents.
- Print. Acrylic is one of the friendliest surfaces for UV ink.
Watch out
Two enemies: static dust, which shows as specks in solid colors, and crazing, which is fine cracking caused by flooding acrylic with aggressive solvent. Also great for reverse printing: mirror the artwork, print white behind it, and view it through the sheet for a deep glossy finish.
Test: cross-hatch on a corner. For displays, check for dust specks under strong light before delivery.
ABS, polycarbonate and PET
GRIP: USUALLY GOODPreparation recipe
- Clean with IPA on a lint-free cloth. Let it dry.
- Most ABS, PC and PET parts print well after cleaning alone.
- If a part fails the tape test, add the plastics primer, or a light flame pass on the Modico, and test again.
Watch out
Molded parts sometimes carry mold-release agents from the factory. They are invisible, they are silicone-based, and they ruin adhesion. If a new part fails for no visible reason, clean harder and suspect mold release. Textured surfaces print with a softer look than smooth ones.
Test: cross-hatch tape test on the first piece of every new part number.
PE and PP (polyethylene and polypropylene)
GRIP: THE HARD ONESPreparation recipe
- Accept the truth: without pretreatment, almost nothing sticks to PE and PP. Squeeze bottles, caps, buckets and many containers are made of them.
- Clean with IPA.
- Treat with flame, corona or plasma on the Modico system. The water drop test shows the change instantly: the drop stops beading and spreads.
- Print soon after treatment. The effect fades within hours to days.
- For repeat products, a matched adhesion promoter plus flame gives the most reliable result.
Watch out
Flexible PE parts bend, and thick UV ink layers are hard. Heavy solid coverage on a squeezable bottle can crack when squeezed. Keep ink layers thin on flexible parts and test the real squeeze.
Test: cross-hatch, then flex the part hard and inspect. Then tape test again on the flexed area.
Wood and MDF
GRIP: EASY, BUT THIRSTYPreparation recipe
- Sand lightly if rough, then remove every trace of dust. Vacuum, then tack cloth.
- Raw wood drinks ink. Colors look softer and darker than on screen. For bright, sharp artwork, print a white underbase, or seal the wood first.
- Sealed, lacquered or melamine-faced boards behave like plastic. Clean and treat them as a coated surface.
Watch out
Wood is never flat. Check for warp and bow before printing, and set the print height to the highest point, or the head will strike. Knots and grain absorb differently, which is part of the charm, but tell the client before, not after.
Test: tape test on the sealed version. On raw wood, adhesion is rarely the problem. Appearance is, so approve a printed sample.
Leather and PU leather
GRIP: GOOD, THINK FLEXIBLEPreparation recipe
- Wipe gently with a barely damp IPA cloth. Do not soak leather.
- Waxed, oiled or heavily finished leathers resist ink. Degrease carefully and test, or choose a different leather finish.
- Print thin. Skip heavy varnish floods on parts that fold.
Watch out
Cured UV ink is a hard layer, and leather bends. Thick solid coverage on a fold line will crack. Design around it: thinner ink layers, smaller solid areas, and artwork placed away from the sharpest folds where possible.
Test: print, then fold the sample the way the real product folds, twenty times. Inspect the fold line. Then tape test.
Ceramic, porcelain and candle jars
GRIP: TREAT LIKE GLASSPreparation recipe
- Glazed ceramic behaves like glass. Clean with IPA, then Pyrosil or primer, then print.
- Unglazed ceramic is porous and grips well, but drinks ink like raw wood. A white underbase keeps colors bright.
- Candle jars are usually coated or tinted glass. Test the coating exactly like a perfume bottle coating.
Watch out
Candle jars live next to a flame and get warm. Keep heavy artwork away from the hottest zone near the top rim, and test a printed jar with a burning candle through a full burn before promising anything.
Test: cross-hatch, IPA rub, and for candles, a real burn test.

Flatbed UV printing with Direct Color Systems
Flatbed is the workhorse of UV printing. The material lies flat on a bed, the printhead travels over it, and the UV lamp cures the ink instantly. Our flatbed line is Direct Color Systems (DCS), UV LED printers made in the USA, distributed and supported by PRO TECHnology across the region.
Flat and rigid materials, in high precision
Glass panels, acrylic sheets, metal and aluminium, wood, leather goods, plastics, signage, awards, phone cases, flat perfume bottles and corporate gifts. DCS printers are known for fine detail, strong white ink, clear varnish, and true raised, textured printing.
ADA, Braille and tactile signage
Braille is not reserved for one model. Every DCS printer is built for raised and tactile work, and DCS completed the required ADA certification in the USA. The software carries a built-in Braille tool that converts text from many languages into Braille automatically and holds the certified dot size, shape and spacing, so the file comes out ready to print with no manual dot building. The 1800BG is the dedicated signage machine of the family. The Braille tool is a paid software option. Sun Studio produces this work daily in Dubai.
Flatbed habits that make the difference
Flatness and height first
The bed is flat, but the material is not always. Check for warp, tape down lifted corners the right way, and set the print height to the highest point of the material. Most head strikes come from a corner nobody checked.
Use jigs and templates
Printing 50 pens, coasters or phone cases? A simple jig holds every piece in the exact same position, so one layout file prints the whole batch perfectly. Jigs turn slow one-by-one work into real production. We can help you design them.
Raised effects cost time and ink
Raised varnish and Braille are printed in many layers, and every layer takes a pass. Plan the time, and put the height where it matters: the logo, the pattern, the dots. Not the whole surface.
Reverse print on clear materials
On acrylic and glass, print the artwork mirrored, then white behind it, and flip the sheet. The print sits protected behind the material with a deep, glossy look. A flatbed favorite for signage and displays.

Cylindrical, conical and seamless printing with LSINC
The product itself rotates while the printhead lays down the artwork in a spiral. Because there are practically no passes, the industry usually calls it seamless printing. The result is direct decoration on bottles, jars, tumblers, tubes and conical or tapered products, with no labels, no shrink sleeves, no screens and no plates. Our line is LSINC, made in the USA, with PRO TECHnology as the regional distributor and partner.
Direct-to-object decoration on round and tapered products
Perfume bottles, cosmetic containers, beverage bottles, tumblers, cups, candle jars, tubes and industrial containers, in cylindrical, conical, tapered and stepped shapes. White ink, full color and varnish print in register directly on the product, and the artwork can change between pieces for personalization and variable data.
No passes. One continuous spiral.
A flatbed builds an image out of passes, and every join between passes has to line up. Here the product turns under the head and the artwork is printed as one continuous spiral around it, so there is practically nothing to join and no pass banding to fight. That is where the name seamless printing comes from, and it is also why full 360 degree wrap-around artwork looks natural on the product.
Habits that make the difference
The coating decides the job
Most bottles arrive coated: cold-end coating on plain glass, color coatings on perfume bottles. The coating, not the glass, is what the ink grips. Clean, pretreat with Pyrosil on the Modico, prime with the matched primer, and test every new bottle batch. The full recipe is in Pretreatment & Surfaces.
Design for the full 360
Spiral printing gives you the whole surface, so artwork can wrap without a visible join. Still check registration and the start and end of the artwork on the first piece of every run, and pay extra attention on conical and tapered shapes where the diameter changes as the head travels.
White underbase on colored glass
Amber, black and colored bottles swallow color. A white layer under the artwork keeps it bright and correct. On clear bottles, white also creates frosted and blocking effects.
Judge speed honestly
Advertised speed and real production speed are two different numbers. Loading, unloading, pretreatment and quality checks all take time. When planning production or ROI, use the realistic net output measured on your actual product, not the brochure maximum. We measure this with you at Sun Studio.
Perfume and cosmetics: the honest rules
- Perfume is mostly alcohol. Unprotected print will not survive it.
- Protect printed artwork with clear varnish as standard practice.
- For matte bottles, the strongest current approach: use a bottle already professionally coated in the background color, print only the artwork, then varnish.
- Never promise perfume-proof before testing the client's actual bottle, coating and perfume together, over days.

Wall printing with wallPen

Offices, hotels, retail, restaurants, clinics, schools, kids rooms and homes. It prints on concrete, plaster, wood, tile, metal and prepared glass. Photographic detail, corporate branding, wayfinding, full wall art.
Speed and lifetime, the real numbers
Speed runs roughly 2 to 16 square metres per hour depending on quality mode, artwork and surface. Indoors, prints can last more than 12 years in good conditions. Outdoors, sun and weather shorten life, and a suitable protective coating extends it. We say this before the job, not after.
Preparing the wall
The wall recipe
- The wall must be clean, dry and sound. Fill cracks and holes, and let the filler dry fully.
- Matte emulsion paint is the friendliest surface. Fresh paint should cure per the paint maker's guidance before printing.
- Glossy paint, tiles, metal and prepared glass can be printed, with the right cleaning and, where needed, a primer.
- On unusual paints or surfaces, print a small hidden test patch first, let it cure, then tape test it before the full artwork.
On site, the day of printing
- Setup takes roughly 30 minutes.
- Protect the floor and mask the edges.
- Keep people out of the work zone while printing.
- Damp walls are the main enemy. Moisture behind the paint will lift any print eventually, so solve the damp before the art.
Outdoor life depends on exposure. For exterior projects, plan the protective coating into the quotation from day one, and set the client's expectations honestly.
Hybrid UV printing with IQDEMY
A hybrid UV printer from Switzerland for material that does not fit anywhere else. It handles rigid panels and unlimited-length material on the same machine, so a four metre glass or metal panel is a normal job, not a problem.
Big, thick and long, on one machine
Material can be up to 20 cm thick and 2.5 m wide, at any length your room allows. Architectural glass, metal sheets, doors, panels, boards, signage and long-format work. If you have a 4 metre glass or metal panel that needs printing, bring it to us.
The right job for a hybrid
Hybrid is the answer when the material is oversized, heavy, rigid or longer than any bed. For plain wallpaper and fabric on a roll, a dedicated roll-to-roll machine is usually faster, cheaper to buy and cheaper to run on ink. We will tell you which one your product actually needs.
Large glass and metal panels still need cleaning, Pyrosil or plasma treatment and the matched primer. On a four metre panel a failed adhesion test is an expensive lesson, so test a corner first.
Confectionery printing with Imago
This is the one section on this page that is not UV. Imago printers, made in Poland, print directly on food using food-grade edible inks: chocolates, cakes, macarons, cookies, desserts and bakery surfaces, in high resolution with accurate color.
Real artwork, directly on the food
Logos on chocolates for corporate gifting. Photos on cakes. Designs on macarons for weddings and events. Branded desserts for hotels, cafes and patisseries. Because it is digital, every piece can be different, and small runs make sense.
Edible ink and UV ink never mix
Imago uses food-grade edible inks made for eating. UV ink is never used on food, and edible ink is never used in a UV machine. Separate machines, separate inks, separate consumables, always. There are no exceptions to this rule.
Simple rules for good food printing
Hygiene like a kitchen, because it is one
Treat the printing area as a food area. Clean hands, gloves, clean surfaces, and only food-approved cleaning practice around the machine. The print is part of the food.
Use only approved edible consumables
Only the edible inks and consumables approved for the machine. Check dates, store inks sealed as the label says, and never top up with anything that is not certified food-grade.
The surface still matters
Smooth, even surfaces like chocolate tablets and macaron shells give the sharpest results. Porous or uneven surfaces soften the detail. Test the design on the actual product before promising the client.
Colors and the food underneath
Just like in UV printing, the background changes the result. Artwork shows brightest on light surfaces like white chocolate and light icing. On dark chocolate, expect a softer result, and test first.
Chocolatiers, patisseries, bakeries, hotels, cafes, caterers and corporate gifting companies across the UAE and GCC. If your product is sweet and your client wants their brand on it, this is the machine for the job.
Testing and quality
Tests are cheap. Failed production is expensive. These are the tests we run at Sun Studio in Dubai, written so anyone on your team can run them too.
Cross-hatch tape test (adhesion)
- Take a cured, cooled sample. Wait at least a few hours after printing, ideally 24.
- With a sharp blade, cut a grid of lines through the ink down to the surface: about 6 cuts one way, 6 cuts across, a couple of millimetres apart. You get a grid of small squares.
- Brush the grid gently to remove loose flakes.
- Press strong clear tape firmly over the grid. Rub it down.
- Pull the tape off in one fast, smooth pull at an angle.
- Look at the grid and the tape. Nothing lifted, or only tiny flakes at the cut lines: pass. Whole squares on the tape: fail. Fix the preparation and test again.
Alcohol rub test (chemical resistance)
- Soak a cotton pad or cloth in isopropyl alcohol.
- Rub back and forth over the print with medium finger pressure. One back and forth is one cycle.
- Count cycles until color transfers to the pad or the print visibly wears.
- Record the number. Compare it against the job's real life. A perfume bottle needs far more resistance than a wall plaque.
- Varnish over the artwork raises this number a lot. If the count is low, protect the print and retest.
Real product test (perfume and cosmetics)
- Use the client's actual bottle, coating and perfume. Substitutes prove nothing.
- Spray or drip the perfume on the printed area. Let it sit. Wipe and rub.
- Repeat daily for a week. Alcohol damage often shows over days, not minutes.
- Also test handling: pockets, handbags, fingers. That is the product's real life.
Everyday abuse tests
- Fingernail and coin scratch, especially on edges.
- 24 hour water soak for drinkware and outdoor items, then tape test again.
- Flex test for leather and soft plastics: bend hard, twenty times, inspect.
- Burn test for candle jars: one full burn with artwork in place.
When testing is not optional
- New material or new product
- New batch or new supplier of a known product
- New ink, primer or pretreatment step
- Any perfume, cosmetics or outdoor job
- After machine service that touched the lamp or heads
The golden sample habit
For every repeating job, keep one client-approved printed piece, labeled with the date, material batch, primer and settings. When a question comes up months later, the golden sample answers it in seconds. It is the cheapest quality system in the world.

A UV printer rewards routine. Most breakdowns we see started as a skipped daily task. Always follow your machine's own manual first. This is the common-sense layer on top, and it applies across DCS, LSINC, IQDEMY and wallPen.

Troubleshooting: start with the symptom
- This is adhesion, so the answer lives in steps 1 to 4 of the workflow. Was the surface really clean? Gloves on? Fresh cloth?
- Was pretreatment or primer needed and skipped? Coated bottles fail without Pyrosil almost every time.
- Was the primer thin, dry and inside its working window?
- Check the cure too. Under-cured ink feels fine and fails the tape test. Slow down, clean the lamp, check lamp age.
- Fix one variable, print one sample, tape test. Repeat until pass, then write down the winning recipe.
- The ink is under-cured. Stop stacking or packing anything.
- Clean the UV lamp glass. Ink mist on the glass blocks a surprising amount of light.
- Check lamp hours against the service life in the manual. Old lamps glow but do not cure.
- Thick layers, heavy white and raised varnish need more light: slow the pass or raise lamp power.
- Very cold rooms slow curing chemistry. Bring the room to normal temperature.
- Run a nozzle check. Missing nozzles are the usual cause.
- Run the head clean cycle, check again. Repeat once. Do not run ten cleans in a row, you will waste ink and flood the station.
- Add a colour bar, or check bar, outside the design area. It keeps every nozzle firing during the job and shows you immediately which channel dropped out.
- Check the print height. Too high makes fuzzy, banded print.
- Check for static on plastics pulling the ink dots. Use anti-static measures.
- If a nozzle stays dead after proper cleaning, contact support. Do not scrub heads by hand.
- Stop the job. Inspect the head area gently, following the manual.
- Find the cause before printing again: warped material, a lifted corner, tape edges, wrong height setting, or something left on the bed.
- Always measure material at its highest point, not its edge.
- Run a nozzle check after any strike. If quality dropped, contact support. Head strikes are the most expensive habit in UV printing.
- White pigment settles. Shake cartridges or run the circulation routine before white-heavy jobs.
- One pass of white is often not enough on dark or clear surfaces. Print two white layers, or use the high-density white mode.
- Run a nozzle check on the white channel specifically.
- If white keeps fading over days of storage, ask us about ink rotation and storage practice.
- Screens show light, printers lay ink. They never match perfectly. Judge color from a printed sample, not a monitor.
- Check the RIP settings: same profile, same mode, same white underbase as the approved run.
- On clear or dark material, missing white underbase makes everything look dull and dark.
- The material itself shifts color. Wood, kraft, tinted glass all move the result. Approve per material.
- Keep the golden sample next to the machine and compare under the same light.
- This is contamination, almost always silicone or oil. The ink literally runs away from the dirty spot.
- Find the source: household cleaning sprays, hand creams, mold release on plastics, a contaminated cloth.
- Re-clean with fresh IPA and a fresh cloth. Ban silicone sprays from the print room completely.
- Stubborn parts may need a stronger degrease or a flame pass. Test after.
- Static is pulling dust onto the surface faster than you can wipe it.
- Keep protective film on until the last moment. Use an anti-static cloth or ionizer just before printing.
- Clean the room, not just the part. Dust in the air lands on wet ink.
- For premium displays, inspect under strong angled light before curing the varnish layer.
Repeated head strikes, a nozzle that stays dead after correct cleaning, error codes, leaks, or anything electrical. Do not open assemblies the manual does not ask you to open. Go to the Support tab and reach our technical team in Dubai.
Safety
UV printing is safe when a few rules are respected every single day. Make these habits, not reminders.
Uncured ink touches skin? Act.
Liquid UV ink is a skin irritant and can cause sensitization over time. Wear nitrile gloves whenever handling ink, primers or freshly printed, uncured pieces. If ink touches skin, wash immediately with plenty of soap and water. Never clean skin with solvent. If irritation appears, see a doctor and bring the ink safety data sheet.
UV light is not for eyes
Never look at the UV lamp, and never run the machine with covers or shields removed or defeated. UV light damages eyes and skin. The same goes for handheld curing lamps: point them at the work, never at people.
Alcohol and flame do not mix
IPA is flammable. Keep it sealed, away from the UV lamp, away from the Pyrosil flame, and away from anything hot. Ventilate the room. Never do flame pretreatment near open solvent containers or soaked cloths.
Flame treatment rules
Pyrosil uses a real flame fed by a propane and butane gas mix. Clear the area, keep a stable stand, keep gas cans sealed and stored per the label, and let treated parts cool before handling. Treat it with the same respect as any torch.
Food printing hygiene
The Imago area is a food area. Clean hands, gloves, food-safe cleaning practice, and only certified edible inks and consumables. UV inks, solvents and pretreatment chemicals stay physically away from the food printing zone, always.
Waste goes out properly
Waste ink, used wipes and empty cartridges are chemical waste, not office trash. Collect them in closed containers and dispose of them according to local rules. Our team can advise on the right practice for your site.
General workshop sense
Two people for heavy materials. Cables off the floor. No food or drink in the UV print room. Keep the safety data sheets for every ink and primer where the team can actually find them.

Almost. Rigid and semi-rigid surfaces like glass, metal, acrylic, wood, leather, ceramics and most plastics print very well with the right preparation. The honest exceptions: some untreated PE and PP plastics need pretreatment first, silicone surfaces are practically unprintable, and stretchy fabrics belong to other printing technologies. When in doubt, send us the item and we will test it.
No. Acrylic, most ABS, PC and PET, wood and many coated boards usually print well after a good clean. Glass, ceramics, bare metal and coated bottles usually need pretreatment, a primer, or both. The Pretreatment & Surfaces tab gives the recipe per surface, and the tape test gives the final answer.
Because most beautiful surfaces are not white. On dark, clear or metallic materials, color ink alone looks weak and see-through. A white layer underneath makes the artwork bright and solid. White pigment is heavy, settles in the lines, and needs daily agitation, which is why it gets its own care routine.
Indoors, on a well-prepared surface, years. wallPen wall prints can exceed 12 years indoors in good conditions. Outdoors, sun and weather shorten life, and a protective coating extends it. The honest answer for any specific product is a test on that product, which is exactly what we do at Sun Studio before big jobs.
Standard UV print on glass or ceramic is not dishwasher-proof and we do not claim it is. Hand wash printed drinkware. Industrial dishwasher-grade decoration needs special treatments and testing. If your product truly needs dishwasher survival, tell us first and we will plan and test for it honestly.
The UV printed layer is not certified for direct food contact. The safe rule: print on the outside of cups, jars and containers, keep artwork away from the lip line where mouths touch, and never print inside a food container. Printing on the food itself is a different technology: our Imago confectionery printers use certified food-grade edible inks for that.
Yes, with the Imago confectionery printers. They print directly on chocolates, cakes, macarons, desserts and bakery surfaces using food-grade edible inks made for eating. This is a completely separate technology from UV printing, with its own machines, inks and hygiene rules. See the Confectionery tab.
Only a test can say. Perfume is mostly alcohol and EDP is strong. The result depends on the bottle coating, the pretreatment, the ink, the varnish protection and the perfume formula, all together. We never promise perfume-proof before testing your actual bottle with your actual perfume, and neither should anyone else.
Digital printing has no plates and no screens, so short runs and even single pieces are usually practical, and Sun Studio regularly produces samples and small batches. Some specific processes do carry a minimum, so we confirm per job rather than promising a blanket no-MOQ.
We get close, often very close, using color profiles and test prints. A perfect Pantone match on every material is not honest to promise, because the material itself shifts color. The professional way: we print your color on your material, you approve a physical sample, and that sample becomes the standard.
Because something changed that nobody announced. Bottle factories change cold-end coatings, plastic molders change release agents, board suppliers change lacquers. Same product name, different surface. This is exactly why every new batch gets a quick tape test before production. Five minutes, zero drama.
Vector files (AI, PDF, EPS) for logos and text, because they stay sharp at any size. For images, high resolution at the real print size, around 300 dpi. Tell us the exact print area and send fonts converted to outlines. If the artwork will be printed large, vector is not a preference, it is a requirement.
The machine prints many layers of varnish or ink on the same spot, curing each layer as it goes. The layers stack into real height you can feel, following the artwork exactly. It is used for luxury logos, textures, and ADA Braille signage, where the DCS software builds the certified dots automatically. Height costs time and ink, so we design it where it matters most.
