The printer stands on the floor on a wheeled platform with levelling and a steerable front axle, and travels in front of the wall, usually along a rail; nothing is fixed to the wall. Print height reaches up to four metres, width is not limited at all, so a full corridor or facade runs as one continuous piece of artwork with no seams or joins.

If necessary, the printing substrate must be pre-treated. Each material should be tested before printing. We guide and supply the correct pre-treatment when it is needed.

Print speed is about 2 to 3 square metres per hour on typical jobs; wallPen's FAQ gives 0.8 to 10 square metres per hour depending on the settings, the surface, the number of passes and the resolution. Set a realistic speed for the work you do, add your setup time, and enter your own selling price per square metre. What is the time needed to set up the wallPen?
One person can set the machine up in under 30 minutes, according to wallPen. Allow extra time on a new site for calibration and the wall check.
What is the print speed?
About 2 to 3 square metres per hour on typical jobs. wallPen's FAQ gives 0.8 to 10 square metres per hour depending on the settings. The speed you get depends on the wall surface, flat or curved, the number of passes, the resolution in DPI and the artwork size.
Can I remove the wall print?
- On glass with a ceramic hob scraper or razor blade. Otherwise, a print can always be painted over in two or three layers.
- Wood must be sanded. Metal or concrete needs sandblasting or glass bead blasting.
What is the ink quality?
- wallPen describes its UV ink as low-odour, vegan and made in Europe, without solvents or thinners.
- The inks are ideal for wall printing because they cure within milliseconds and are instantly scratch and abrasion resistant.
- For hotels, schools, healthcare sites and heritage buildings, ask us for the ink safety data sheet before work starts.
- The ink dries within milliseconds and is abrasion resistant, waterproof and solvent resistant.
Does the wall need to be perfectly smooth?
No. wallPen can print on smooth and textured walls.
Can you print on textured or uneven walls?
Yes. The printhead has a laser system that automatically adjusts the distance from the wall.
Is surface preparation required before printing?
Yes. Surface preparation depends on the material. We guide and supply the correct pre-treatment when needed.
How long does the print last indoors versus outdoors?
Indoors, prints can last up to 12 years, depending on the surface, location and wear, when proper surface preparation is followed. For outdoor applications, UV resistance is typically around 2 years depending on the material. That lifespan can be significantly extended, often to over 5 years, by applying a transparent UV protective coating.
Is the ink safe, and does it smell?
wallPen describes its UV ink as low-odour, vegan and made in Europe, without solvents or thinners, and the cured print is abrasion resistant. Ventilate the room while printing, and ask us for the ink safety data sheet before work in hotels, schools or healthcare sites.
What are the power requirements on site?
A normal power plug. A standard single phase socket is required: wallPen runs on 100 to 250 V and draws about 200 W while printing.
What file formats do you accept?
The wallPen app opens JPG, PNG, TIF, PSD and PSB files. Artwork made in Illustrator, or supplied as EPS or PDF, is exported to one of these first. File preparation is straightforward and user friendly, requiring only minimal design experience, and we provide a clear step by step guide to ensure a smooth process.
How much space is required between the wall and the print?
The printer requires 6 cm of space on the left, 10 cm on the right, and 25 cm clearance at both the ceiling and the floor. On open walls there are virtually no size limitations. If there are adjacent walls or obstructions on the sides, top or bottom, this minimum clearance is needed to ensure proper operation.
