How to Test a Wall Printer in a Live Demo: 12 Tests and a Scorecard
Published · PRO TECHnology Digital Printing
A demo usually runs on the vendor's file, wall and settings. These twelve tests and a printable scorecard let you judge any wall printer on your own terms.
In a live demo, make every wall printer print the same file, at the same size, on the same surface, in a quality mode you would sell, and time it from a stated start to a stated end. The twelve tests cover set-up time, identical artwork, real speed, small text, banding, white on a dark surface, an uneven wall, margins and access, pausing, your own operator, daily maintenance and written support, and the scorecard adds the quoted price. This page is written by PRO TECHnology in Business Bay, Dubai, the exclusive distributor of wallPen in the Middle East, so it is not independent. The tests apply to any machine, ours included.
- Demo length
- Set by your print area and each vendor's modes. Agree it in writing, and split it over two visits if needed.
- Controls
- Same file, size, surface, primer and lighting; settings stated in writing.
- Scoring
- Measured results scored against limits set beforehand; judged ones blind, 1 to 5.
- Height
- Scored from the written configuration against your tallest job, not tested.
- Pause and resume
- Only the method the manufacturer documents.
- Written by
- PRO TECHnology, the exclusive distributor of wallPen in the Middle East. Not independent.

Key takeaways
- Make every wall printer print the same file at the same size on the same surface, in a quality mode you would sell, with its settings in writing.
- Time speed from the print-start command to the last cured pass, and count only a run that meets your quality standard.
- Test what brochures leave out: small text, banding, white on dark, an uneven wall and the strips it cannot print.
- Take height from the written configuration and score it against your tallest job, and test pause and resume only by the manufacturer's documented method.
- Set weights for the twelve tests and the quoted price before the first demo, keep measured and judged scores apart, and test every claim the same way, ours included.
How do you run a fair wall printer demo?
A demo is a sales event: the vendor picks the file, the wall and the settings. A fair test turns that around. You supply the file and the surface, fix the conditions, and run every machine through the same tests.
How long the twelve tests take depends on the area your file prints and the mode each vendor uses, so ask each vendor in writing how long its machine needs, book that time, and split the tests over two visits if needed. Send files and questions ahead and prime the test panels before the day. What to compare between wall printers, and how wallPen answers each check, is in our wall printing machine comparison and buyer's guide. This page is the next step: what to make each machine do in a live demo, and how to score it. After you choose, the checks before you accept the machine at handover are in our UV printing machine acceptance checklist.
Ground rules for every test
- Send the same test plan, files and timetable to every vendor before any demo.
- Run the vendors in a random order, and show no vendor another's results until every demo is done.
- Use the same file and print size for every machine. Where you can, run every demo at one site on the same wall bay. Otherwise print Tests 2 to 7 on removable panels you bring to each demo, primed and painted from one batch, and record the lighting, temperature and humidity at the start of each test.
- Have the vendor state resolution, passes, print direction, quality mode and white setting in writing before each test, and record any change.
- Time each test from a stated start to a stated end, on video with a clock in view.
- Let the vendor's operator run the machine, except in Test 10, and note any other help.
- Judge blind: take the panels away, cover logos and code them, and judge them side by side under one light after the last demo. Use at least three judges who do not know which machine made which panel, ideally people who did not watch the demos, and none from a vendor. Write the pass description first.
- Take height from the written configuration, not from a test.
- Put safety first. Get the safety data sheets for every ink and cleaning fluid, and the Declaration of Conformity, before the demo. Near the machine and when handling ink, wear the eye protection and gloves they specify. Keep the distance the vendor sets while it prints, and use the loupe only once the machine has stopped. Use a socket with residual-current protection, route cables where nobody can trip, and keep every test area within reach from the floor.
- Fix pass marks, scoring limits and weights before the first demo, and keep them.
Each test is marked objective (measured, with a unit) or subjective (judged); some are both. Keep the two kinds of score apart.
Where other machines may lead. Some wall printers offer a taller printable height, a lower price or a longer written warranty than the wallPen, and some publish a higher speed. Those can be real advantages. Test each the same way for every machine, ours included: speed in a mode you would sell, height from the written configuration, warranty from the written terms and price from the written quotation. Score all four with the weights you set before the first demo.
What should you bring to a wall printer demo?
- Your artwork at final size, as a vector file or a high-resolution image.
- Photographs of the walls you plan to print, with rough dimensions.
- A sample of a dark wall finish or panel, if you will sell white on dark walls.
- Primed test panels for each machine, from one batch, and a relief panel for the uneven wall test.
- Your quality standard: a print you have sold, or a close-up photograph of one.
- The names of the operators who will run the machine, with one of them present.
- A timer or phone video, a steel tape measure, a 2 m straightedge with a feeler or taper gauge, a loupe with a millimetre scale, a cross-cut kit with standard tape, a scale reading to 0.1 g, a white card, a thermometer and hygrometer, and coded covers for blind judging; a spectrophotometer and a lux meter if you have them.
What goes in the test file
One file, sent to every vendor, covers Tests 2 to 6. Fix its size for every vendor, for example 2.0 m wide by 1.5 m high, printed within reach from the floor. We suggest solid patches of each process colour plus red, green and blue, each crossing at least three passes of the print head; a grey ramp and a long gradient; lines of 0.1, 0.25, 0.5 and 1.0 mm and text at 2, 4, 6, 8 and 12 pt, positive and reversed, in Arabic and English; a photograph with skin tones that you own; measuring marks a known distance apart, such as 1,000 mm; a white block with white alone, white under colour and small white text; and the same colour block without white, for timing.
Tests 1 to 3: set-up, identical artwork and real speed
Test 1: Packed-to-ready setup time
- Purpose: the time from transport cases to a first good print, and back into the cases, is paid on every job.
- Bring or ask for: the machine fully packed, and the crew size in writing.
- Keep the same: arrival point, carrying distance, floor and socket; the crew is the size the vendor declared.
- Measure: minutes from the first case opened to the first nozzle check that passes on the wall, with calibration done, and minutes from the end of printing to fully packed. Minutes times crew gives person-minutes.
- Score: objective. The fewest person-minutes for set-up plus pack-down scores highest. Note any gap against the vendor's published time.
Test 2: Identical artwork and size
- Purpose: every machine prints exactly the same job, at the size in the file.
- Bring or ask for: your test file, and a primed test panel per machine from one batch.
- Keep the same: file, size, surface, primer and lighting, with resolution, passes and mode written down first.
- Measure: the size error between the measuring marks and the file, and the difference between the diagonals, in mm. About an hour after printing, and again after 24 hours or more, at the same times for every machine, a cross-cut tape test to ISO 2409 on a smooth panel, as the standard does not suit textured coatings (ASTM D3359 is the similar method for metal). Our guide to testing UV ink adhesion shows how.
- Score: objective. Smaller errors score higher. A cross-cut class worse than your pass mark, [class], is a fail.
Test 3: Actual speed at comparable, saleable quality
- Purpose: a real square metres per hour figure, not a brochure maximum.
- Bring or ask for: each vendor's fastest mode that still meets your quality standard, judged on this same print in Tests 4 and 5, stated in writing with resolution, passes, direction and white setting.
- Keep the same: file, printed area, white setting and quality standard.
- Measure: net m² per hour for the colour part of the file, using its full printed rectangle as the area, from the print-start command to the end of the last cured pass; cleaning stops and pauses in minutes; and job throughput, the same area divided by the hours from the first case opened to fully packed. Time the white block separately in Test 6.
- Score: objective. The highest net speed scores highest, but only for a run that meets your standard; a failed run scores zero and is listed as a fail. A published speed without its mode cannot be compared.
Tests 4 to 6: small text, banding and white ink
Test 4: Small text, fine lines and gradients
- Purpose: detail is where machines differ: signage text, line art, logos and gradients.
- Bring or ask for: the text, line and gradient blocks in your file, and the loupe.
- Keep the same: the Test 3 mode, lighting, and two viewing distances, such as 0.3 m and 1 m, marked on the floor.
- Measure: the thinnest unbroken line, in mm; the smallest legible text, positive and reversed, in pt; visible steps in the gradient.
- Score: objective for line width; subjective for legibility and smoothness, each judge scoring 1 to 5, median taken.

Test 5: Banding and solid-colour consistency
- Purpose: solids should look even across the passes of the print head. Banding, a repeating stripe, is what clients notice first.
- Bring or ask for: the solid patches in your file.
- Keep the same: the Test 3 mode, surface and lighting.
- Measure: visible stripes at 1 m and 3 m; with a spectrophotometer, the spread of ΔE00 readings across each patch.
- Score: subjective for visibility, 1 to 5; objective for the measured spread, smaller scoring higher.
Test 6: White ink on a dark surface
- Purpose: light colours on dark walls need white, because process colours are transparent.
- Bring or ask for: your dark sample, painted from one tin for every machine, and the white block in your file.
- Keep the same: sample, file, lighting, and the white setting (layers and passes) in writing.
- Measure: any white edge showing around the colour, in mm, under the loupe; the smallest legible white text, in pt; extra minutes for the white block against the same block without white; with a spectrophotometer, the L* of the white over the dark sample, where higher means more opaque.
- Score: objective for the white edge, the extra time and the L* reading; subjective for the smallest legible white text, and for evenness and opacity against a white card, 1 to 5.

Tests 7 and 8: uneven walls, margins and access
Test 7: Distance control on an uneven wall
- Purpose: real walls bow, lean and carry texture; see how the machine holds its print head distance, and what that does to sharpness.
- Bring or ask for: each vendor's compensation range in writing, then a test panel based on your own walls, fixed to a wall within reach from the floor: a flat area, steps of known height such as 2, 5 and 10 mm, a gentle ramp and a strip of the textured finish you print most.
- Keep the same: the panel, its profile measured with a straightedge before each run, and the Test 3 mode.
- Measure: head strikes and manual distance changes, as counts; change in sharpness and registration across the steps, in mm.
- Score: objective. A head strike inside the vendor's declared range is a fail. Features outside that range are marked and not scored for that vendor. Count the features where the registration offset and line-width change stay within limits you set beforehand, [mm]. For layered surfaces, see what to check on relief and installed panels.

Test 8: Printable margins and physical access
- Purpose: unprinted strips and blocked access are lost area on every job.
- Bring or ask for: a bay with an inside corner, skirting and a socket, a frame file no taller than you can reach from the floor, and in writing the vertical axis set quoted and the printable height after margins.
- Keep the same: the bay and the file.
- Measure: the unprinted gap to the floor or skirting, to the inside corner on each side and around the socket, in mm, all within reach from the floor; the clear depth and rail length needed, in mm; the width and height of the largest packed item, in mm, and the weight of the heaviest item, in kg. Height and the top margin are not tested: record them from the written configuration.
- Score: objective. Smaller gaps score higher. Record the written printable height after margins, in m, for the configuration quoted, and score it against the tallest wall you print regularly, [your height]: a configuration that covers it scores 10, one that does not scores 0. Height is scored from the written configuration, never tested.
Tests 9 to 12: pausing, operators, upkeep and written support
Test 9: Manufacturer-approved pause/resume
- Purpose: jobs get interrupted. Check that a print can be paused and continued without a visible join.
- Bring or ask for: the documented pause and resume procedure, and the procedure after a power interruption, in writing beforehand. Do not cut the power unless the manufacturer documents recovery and the vendor agrees in writing.
- Keep the same: the block, a pause point agreed beforehand, and the pause length.
- Measure: minutes until printing restarts; whether it continues in place or restarts the file; the offset at the join, in mm; how visible the join is.
- Score: objective for time and offset; subjective for visibility, 1 to 5. If the area would have to be printed again, that is a fail.
Test 10: Operator workflow and training
- Purpose: your staff, not the demonstrator, will run the machine.
- Bring or ask for: one of your operators, shown the emergency stop by the vendor before anything else; a simple second file such as a logo; and the training plan in writing: days, people, place and language.
- Keep the same: the operator and a briefing of the same length for every vendor, such as 30 minutes. Note the order of the demos, because the operator gains practice with each one.
- Measure: steps and minutes from file import to print start; vendor interventions; errors. List the software languages, file formats and licence type.
- Score: objective for steps, minutes and interventions; subjective for the operator's own rating, 1 to 5, kept apart from the blind-judged scores. Needing hands-on help to start is a fail. Life after the purchase is covered in what the first months of a wall printing business involve.
Test 11: Maintenance and consumables
- Purpose: daily care and ink use cost time and money every working day.
- Bring or ask for: the documented daily start-up and shut-down, run in front of you, and in writing the ink price list, ink use per m², shelf life, white ink handling, the maintenance schedule, the number of print heads, the price of a replacement head and any written head-life claim.
- Keep the same: the vendor's own routine and the Test 3 print.
- Measure: routine minutes; ink used, in ml, by weight where possible; ink cost per m² from the price list. Record, without scoring, any odour during printing and 15 minutes after, and how the room is ventilated.
- Score: objective, with written items as a document check. Fewer minutes and a lower cost score higher. Flag a missing white ink or idle-time procedure. To take the costs further, see how running costs feed into payback.
Test 12: Written support, parts and warranty
- Purpose: what happens after a fault matters more than the demo.
- Bring or ask for: one questionnaire for every vendor, answered in writing: the total price for the configuration your jobs need (machine, white, the vertical axis set for your tallest job, track, installation, training and delivery), with currency and VAT basis; warranty length and exclusions (print heads, wear parts, non-genuine ink, head strikes); who honours it locally; response times; spare parts held locally; training; software terms; the CE Declaration of Conformity and ink safety data sheets; two local customers on the same model who are not owned by or related to the vendor. For a wallPen, send it to our Digital Printing team.
- Keep the same: the questionnaire and deadline.
- Measure: a number or a document for each item.
- Score: objective, as a document check. Before the first demo, write a target for each item, such as warranty months on the machine and on print heads, on-site response in working days and parts held in your country. Score each written answer against its target; a verbal or missing answer scores zero. No written warranty is a fail. The quoted price is scored on its own row of the scorecard.

How to weight the scores
- Before the first demo, give the twelve tests and the quoted price weights adding up to 100, based on the work you sell: more for white ink if you print on dark walls, more for speed for large murals, more for price if budget decides.
- Before the first demo, write for each measured result the value that scores 10 and the value that scores 0: for example, a size error of 0 mm scores 10 and [your limit] mm scores 0. Score each result in proportion between them, no higher than 10 and no lower than 0. Where a test has several measured results, split its weight between them beforehand.
- Score each judged result from the judges' median on the 1 to 5 scale: 1 scores 0, 3 scores 5 and 5 scores 10. Where a test has a measured and a judged part, split its weight between them beforehand.
- Multiply by the weights and keep two totals, objective and subjective. Do not merge them.
- Show every fail next to the totals; good scores elsewhere do not cancel it.
What does wallPen publish for each test?
These are wallPen GmbH's published figures for the wallPen E2, with PRO TECHnology's own terms where stated. They are claims to test, not results. More about the machine is on our wallPen E2 wall printing machine page.

Where can you run these tests on a wallPen?
Sun Studio, our sister company in the same group, runs a wallPen E2 for paying clients from the group's print studio in Al Quoz, Dubai, and offers wall printing for homes and businesses across the UAE. Buyers can watch it print during a demonstration arranged through PRO TECHnology: book a wall printer demonstration and bring your test file, wall photographs and dark sample. Send the list of tests you want to run beforehand, and we will confirm which of them can be run on the day. Saudi customers can also arrange a demonstration in Riyadh with PRONEXT, PRO TECHnology's Saudi company.
Sun Studio is in the same group, so treat it as a demonstration, not an independent reference. Its reasons for choosing the machine are in Sun Studio's first-hand account of working with a wallPen on client sites. If you want a printed wall, not a machine of your own, go to the wall printing service Sun Studio offers in the UAE.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a wall printer demo last?
It depends on the area your test file prints and the mode each vendor uses, so agree the timetable with each vendor in writing beforehand. As a guide, at the 2 to 3 m² an hour that wallPen's FAQ gives in practice, each square metre takes 20 to 30 minutes to print, and wallPen's shop says a white underprint doubles the time. Set-up, the operator test, the daily routine and packing away come on top, and the adhesion check is repeated 24 hours later. If a vendor offers only a short slot, split the tests over two visits and take the written questions on paper beforehand. A short demo of a print the vendor prepared shows its most favourable case, not your work.
Can I bring my own artwork to a wall printer demo?
Yes, and you should. Bring it at final size, as a vector file or a high-resolution image, with a test file holding solid patches, small text, fine lines, a gradient and measuring marks. Send the files ahead so every vendor prints the same thing at the same size, in a mode stated in writing.
How do I compare print speed fairly between wall printers?
Time the same file at the same size, in a quality mode you would sell, from the print-start command to the end of the last cured pass, and divide the printed area by the hours. Record the resolution, passes and white setting, and time any white block separately. Published speeds depend on the mode: wallPen's shop gives about 1 m² an hour in fine quality and more in coarser modes, with a white underprint doubling the time, and its FAQ gives 0.8 to 10 m² an hour by quality and resolution, and about 2 to 3 m² an hour in practice.
How do I test white ink in a demo?
Print a white block, white under colour and small white text on the same dark sample for every machine, with the white setting in writing. Judge how even and opaque the white is against a white card, look for a white edge around the colour under a loupe, and time the block with and without white, because white adds printing time.
How do I test a wall printer on an uneven wall?
Ask each vendor for its distance compensation range in writing, then print on a panel copied from your walls, with a flat area, small steps and a textured strip, fixed within reach from the floor. Count head strikes and check sharpness across the steps. wallPen states that its laser sensors detect irregularities of up to 10 cm in real time and that textured surfaces print to a contour depth of about 10 mm: two different limits.
How do I score warranty and support in a wall printer demo?
Send one written questionnaire to every vendor before the demo, set a target for each item beforehand, and score only written answers against those targets: warranty length and exclusions such as print heads, wear parts, non-genuine ink and head strikes, who honours it locally, response times and which spare parts are held locally. A verbal or missing answer scores zero. For a wallPen from PRO TECHnology, cover runs for 12 months, subject to its terms and excluding wear parts, with the terms confirmed in your quotation; ask how print heads are treated in it.
Can I run these tests on a wallPen in Dubai?
Yes, by arrangement. Book a demonstration through PRO TECHnology on the wallPen E2 at Sun Studio, our sister company in the same group, in Al Quoz, Dubai. Send your test file and the list of tests you want to run beforehand, and we will confirm which of them can be run on the day. Saudi customers can ask for a demonstration in Riyadh with PRONEXT. Sun Studio is not independent of us, so judge what you see there by the same tests you use anywhere else.
Do these tests work for any wall printer brand?
Yes. The twelve tests apply to any vertical wall printer, whoever makes it and whatever it costs. Some machines offer a taller printable height, a lower price or a longer written warranty than the wallPen, and some publish a higher speed. Check each the same way, by measurement or in writing, and score every machine with the weights you set before the first demo.
Should the vendor's operator or my own run the demo?
Both. The vendor's operator runs the machine for most tests, so you see it run by someone who knows it well. In the operator test, one of your own staff runs a simple job after a briefing of the same length from each vendor, because your operators, not the demonstrator, will run it every day.
Should I test what happens if the power is cut?
Only if the manufacturer documents a power-loss recovery procedure and the vendor agrees in writing. Otherwise test only the documented pause and resume method, and ask for the procedure after a power interruption in writing. wallPen's app has a Pause/Continue control and can restart a job at a chosen swath. We found no public wallPen statement on power-loss recovery; its manual and helpdesk are for customers, so ask for that procedure in writing.
