You are welcome to walk in. If you want a particular machine running when you arrive, or you are bringing a client or a consultant, it is worth telling us first — a unit can be set up and running so you hear it and see the output rather than looking at a boxed product. Why humidity and air quality get managed in Dubai

The Gulf climate creates two problems that ordinary air conditioning does not solve on its own.

Humidity. Coastal Dubai spends a large part of the year with high outdoor humidity. Air conditioning removes some moisture as a side effect of cooling, but it is designed to control temperature, not humidity, and it stops removing moisture as soon as the room reaches temperature. The result is a room that feels cold and damp at once. Left alone, persistent high humidity shows up as condensation on glass, musty smells in wardrobes and store rooms, warped timber, and mould in the places air does not move — behind furniture, inside built-in cupboards, in guest rooms that stay shut.

Dust. Fine desert dust is a constant, and it arrives regardless of how well a building is sealed. It settles on surfaces, loads air conditioning filters, and stays airborne long enough to matter for anyone in the household who reacts to it.

Those are different problems needing different machines, which is the first thing worth establishing before buying anything. A dehumidifier removes water from the air. An air purifier removes particles. Neither does the other's job, though some machines do both. What you can see: four separate manufacturers

One point worth making before the detail, because it is a common source of confusion. The indoor air quality equipment in the showroom comes from several different manufacturers, each solving a different problem. Stadler Form is a Swiss indoor-climate brand. MedicAir is a separate manufacturer of medical-grade purification. Kaiterra and Atmocube are separate again, and they make monitors rather than purifiers. They are not variants of one range, and a machine from one does not carry the specifications of another.

Stadler Form dehumidifiers

Stadler Form is a Swiss brand designing dehumidifiers, air purifiers, humidifiers, fans and aroma diffusers. PRO TECHnology is the official regional distributor. In the showroom the dehumidifiers are the machines most people come to see, because humidity is the problem most Dubai households actually have.

The two that get compared most often sit at different ends of the range. Albert removes up to 20 litres of moisture a day and is rated for rooms up to 70 m² — the apartment and villa-room machine, and the one that carries the Amazon's Choice badge in the UAE. Lukas Pro is the large-space unit at up to 50 litres a day, rated to 175 m².

Standing next to both settles questions a specification sheet cannot. How loud is it in a quiet room at night. How large is it really, and will it look acceptable in a living room. How heavy is the water tank when full, and would continuous drainage be easier. Those answers change which machine people buy more often than the litres-per-day figure does.

Stadler Form air purifiers and 2-in-1 machines

The same brand's air purifiers handle dust, pollen and general particulate. The Lukas Pro is worth singling out because it does both jobs in one chassis: a 50 litre per day dehumidifier combined with an H11 HEPA filter delivering 327 CADR of purification, on one footprint and one power point.

MedicAir medical-grade air purification

MedicAir is a separate manufacturer from Stadler Form. Its purifiers are described by the manufacturer as designed and engineered by healthcare professionals, combining HEPA filtration, activated carbon and UV-C, and are built for hospitals, clinics and dental practices rather than for general domestic use.

This is the equipment specified when a room has a clinical or regulatory reason to control airborne contamination — a treatment room, a dental surgery, a waiting area, a laboratory. The performance figures MedicAir publishes for virus and bacteria reduction are the manufacturer's own test claims, and the sensible way to use them is to ask for the specific test data for the specific model before it goes into a specification. To be explicit, because it matters in a tender: Stadler Form products are not medical-grade equipment, and should not be specified as though they were. They are consumer and light-commercial indoor climate appliances, which is a different category and a different price. Indoor air quality monitoring

Purification and dehumidification treat a problem. Monitoring tells you whether you have one, and whether the equipment is working. For any commercial building this is usually the first thing to install, not the last.

Two monitoring brands are represented, and neither is a Stadler Form product:

• Kaiterra — air quality monitors with software analytics, designed for turn-key integration into building management systems.
• Atmocube — monitoring for commercial buildings, presenting nine sensor readings as a single indoor air quality index on a wall-mounted display.

The practical value in a workplace is that monitoring converts an argument into a measurement. "The meeting room is stuffy" becomes a CO₂ reading that either supports the complaint or does not. For landlords, facility managers and anyone pursuing a building certification, the record the monitors produce is the deliverable. Both sit within our wider indoor air quality division.

Different settings, different priorities

The same equipment gets chosen for very different reasons depending on where it goes. It is worth knowing which of these you are before you arrive, because it changes what we would show you.

Why seeing the equipment changes the decision

Almost every specification for this kind of equipment is written from a data sheet, and data sheets are silent on the things that determine whether someone is happy with the machine a year later.

• Noise. A decibel figure is measured in a laboratory. Whether a unit is tolerable in a bedroom at two in the morning is a judgement you make with your ears.
• Physical size. A dehumidifier rated for a large room is a substantial object. People consistently underestimate this from photographs, and it is the most common surprise on delivery.
• Water handling. A high-capacity machine in Dubai humidity fills its tank quickly. Whether you are willing to empty it twice a day, or want continuous drainage to a floor drain instead, is easier to decide with the tank in your hands.
• Controls. If the household or the cleaning staff cannot work the interface, the machine ends up switched off.
• Build quality. Casing, castors, filter access and how the unit moves across a floor are all obvious in person and invisible online.

None of that is an argument against research. It is an argument for doing the arithmetic first and then confirming it physically, which is the sequence that produces the fewest returns.

What a consultation covers

Sizing is where most of the value is, and it is not complicated once the right questions are asked. Bring the following and a specification can usually be worked out while you are there:

• Room dimensions and ceiling height. Volume, not floor area, is what the equipment actually works against — a 40 m² room with a five-metre ceiling is a much larger job than the floor plan suggests.
• The actual problem. Condensation on windows, mould in a wardrobe, dust settling, smells, or a reading from a monitor. Each points somewhere different.
• How the space is used. Occupied all day, or a closed guest room. Doors open or shut. Whether anyone sleeps in the room.
• Whether a drain is available. This decides between tank emptying and continuous drainage, and it is worth checking before you come.
• How many rooms. One villa is a different exercise from forty hotel rooms or a school.
