Cup, Mug and Tumbler Printing Machines: Sublimation Heat Press or UV Direct-to-Object Printer?

Most machines sold as mug printing machines in the UAE are sublimation heat presses: they press a printed transfer onto a mug that already carries a polyester coating, and they cost from a few hundred dirhams. A UV direct-to-object printer jets ink straight onto plain glass, stainless steel, porcelain and ceramic, including clear glasses, dark mugs and qahwa cups, and costs far more. Which one you need depends on the cups you print, not on the price.

This guide is for gift companies, print shops, drinkware brands, hotel and café groups and qahwa cup suppliers in the UAE and Saudi Arabia deciding how to print drinkware. Our guide to LSINC applications lists tumblers, glasses and qahwa cups among the products LSINC printers decorate; this page goes one step further and compares every way a cup gets printed, from a heat press to a factory kiln, then shows which LSINC model fits which cup. For screen, pad and rotary UV machines in general, see our guide to cylindrical printing machine types. If you only need cups printed, not a machine, Sun Studio, the group's print studio in Al Quoz, Dubai, prints glasses, tumblers and qahwa cups as a service.

Key takeaways

  • A "mug printing machine" in a UAE shop is usually a sublimation heat press: listings ran from about AED 240 to AED 5,000 on 28 October 2026. It needs blanks sold with a polyester coating and has no white ink.
  • A UV direct-to-object printer jets ink straight onto plain glass, stainless steel, porcelain and ceramic, with white under the colour, so clear glasses, dark mugs and qahwa cups print without special blanks.
  • Shape decides the LSINC model: the PeriOne and PeriQ360 take tapers within +10°/−2°, the Perivallo360m follows contours up to ±30°, and the PeriH prints handled mugs.
  • Keep artwork out of the lip and rim area, the rim and the top 20 mm of the outside, unless your ink documentation covers food contact.
  • Paper takeaway cups are printed flat, before the cup is formed, so they are not a job for a cylindrical printer.
  • If cup printing is occasional, a print service such as Sun Studio, with no minimum order, avoids buying a machine; the machine pays when drinkware is a steady line of work.

Which machine prints on mugs, cups and tumblers?

Five processes decorate drinkware, and only one of them is usually sold as a "mug printing machine". A sublimation heat press transfers a printed design into a coated blank. A UV direct-to-object printer jets ink onto the item itself. Fired decals and enamels are applied and baked in a kiln. Screen and pad printing lay down one colour at a time. Laser engraving marks steel or glass with no ink at all. Each one prints a different set of cups well.

The rest of this guide is about the first two, because they are what buyers in the UAE and Saudi Arabia compare when they search for a cup or mug printing machine. How screen, pad and rotary UV machines work is set out in our guide to cylindrical printing machine types.

When a sublimation heat press is the right mug printing machine

A sublimation set-up is two machines: an inkjet printer loaded with sublimation ink prints the design onto transfer paper, and a heat press wraps the paper round the mug and heats it. Under heat and pressure the ink turns to gas and bonds into the polymer coating on the mug. Done well, the result is a bright, smooth full-colour image that is part of the coating rather than a layer on top of it.

It is the right machine for a gift shop or a print counter making photo mugs, names and one-off presents on standard white mugs and coated tumblers. The investment is small: on 28 October 2026, mug heat presses listed by UAE sellers in Google Shopping ran from about AED 240 for a single 11 oz mug press to about AED 5,000 for five-station and double-width tumbler presses, before the printer, ink and paper.

Its limits all come from the coating:

  • Coated blanks only. Ordinary drinking glasses, plain hotel porcelain, most qahwa cups and uncoated steel tumblers are not sold with a sublimation coating, so the business is limited to what its blank supplier stocks, at coated-blank prices.
  • No white ink. The coating's own white is the background. Clear glass, dark mugs and coloured steel can only carry a design inside a white coated panel, and white lettering on clear glass is impossible.
  • One piece at a time. Every mug needs its own printed transfer and its own press cycle; multi-station presses run several mugs side by side, but each is still loaded, timed and unloaded by hand.
  • A wrap, not a seamless print. The design is a flat sheet wrapped round the mug, so a full wrap meets itself at a join that the artwork has to hide.

When you need a UV direct-to-object printer

A UV direct-to-object printer holds the cup and jets UV-curable ink straight onto its surface, and LED or UV lamps cure the ink as it goes. Nothing has to be coated first, so the printer works on the cups a business already buys: plain glass, stainless steel, aluminium, porcelain and ceramic. On an industrial helical machine such as the LSINC PeriOne or PeriQ360, the cup turns while the heads advance along it, so a full wrap is laid down as one continuous spiral with no join.

The difference that matters most on drinkware is white ink. A UV printer lays white under the colour wherever the design needs opacity, so a logo stays bright on a black mug, colours stay true on clear glass, and white can be printed on its own. Clear varnish adds gloss, matte and raised effects where the ink configuration includes it. Because each piece is a file, not a plate or a transfer, a run can carry a different name on every cup.

A clear glass rocks tumbler printed in white ink with a mosque silhouette drawn in diagonal lines, a crescent moon, the words Eid Mubarak and a geometric border near the base
White ink alone on clear glass: an Eid Mubarak rocks glass printed at Sun Studio, Dubai. A sublimation press has no white ink, so this design is a UV direct-to-object job.

It is the machine to buy when:

  • You decorate your own stock. Drinkware importers and brands that print plain glasses, tumblers or cups after they arrive, instead of ordering decorated stock months ahead.
  • Your materials are mixed. Gift companies quoting glass one week, steel the next and porcelain qahwa cups for Ramadan.
  • The cup is clear, dark or metallic. Anything that needs white under the colour.
  • Every piece is different. Names, numbers, branches or event dates on each cup, with no tooling between them.

The trade-offs are real. An industrial UV printer is quoted per configuration rather than sold off a shelf, it needs a trained operator, and glass and glazed surfaces usually need cleaning and pre-treatment, such as flame, plasma or a primer, before the ink bonds; our guide to printing on glass covers that step. Adhesion is proven on your own cup, not assumed.

Which LSINC machine prints which cup?

LSINC builds three helical cylindrical printers and one indexed printer for handled mugs. On drinkware, the shape of the cup decides the model before volume does. PRO TECHnology supplies all four as LSINC's exclusive dealer for the Middle East and North Africa; the full specifications are on our LSINC bottle printing machines page and compared model by model in our PeriOne, PeriQ360 and Perivallo360m guide.

Item sizes and tapers are LSINC's published limits; every cup is still checked on the machine before a run is quoted.

The PeriH is the newest of the four and the one built for mugs. Instead of spinning the mug, it indexes it and prints in a single pass at 600 dpi with Epson recirculating heads, two pieces at a time, and LSINC rates it at up to 5 parts a minute. Like the helical machines, it prints CMYK with white and varnish, so dark and coloured ceramic mugs print as well as white ones, with no sublimation coating. It was introduced in our LSINC partnership announcement.

The rim, food contact and washing: settle them before the first run

Drinkware is the one product where the print meets a mouth. Regulators and test laboratories treat the lip and rim area, the rim and the top 20 mm of the outside surface, as a zone of its own: it is the area ASTM C927 tests for lead and cadmium on glasses decorated with ceramic enamels. The simple rule for UV-printed cups is to keep the artwork below that band unless your ink supplier's food-contact documentation covers it, and to ask for that documentation before you quote a hotel or a café chain.

Washing is the other question on every drinkware order. LSINC publishes no dishwasher rating and asks buyers to verify durability on their own items, and pre-treatment, curing and any varnish decide the result. Sun Studio reports that in its own wash tests, prints on glass, steel tumblers and porcelain gahwa cups lasted more than 60 dishwasher cycles in home and commercial machines; its guide to printed gahwa cups in hotel, café and majlis service explains how it tests. What we say about durability ratings is in our applications guide.

Two details catch buyers out. A gilt or platinum rim is a fired decoration the ink cannot sit over neatly, so artwork is set to stop short of it. And a qahwa cup has no handle and a small, curved wall, so the eye only sees part of the design at once; Sun Studio's custom qahwa cup guide shows where artwork should sit.

What about paper and takeaway coffee cups?

Most branded paper coffee cups are printed before they are cups. The design goes onto paperboard by flexographic or offset printing, the board is cut into flat blanks and the blanks are formed into cups, so the order is placed with a cup converter and comes with that converter's minimum quantity. A cylindrical UV printer decorates rigid, finished drinkware instead: the reusable glass, ceramic and steel cups a café sells or serves in.

Buy a cup printing machine, or use a print service?

A machine pays when drinkware printing is a steady line of work. Look at five things before you buy:

  1. Volume across the year, not the peak. Ramadan, Eid, UAE National Day and Saudi National Day crowd orders into a few weeks; the machine has to earn its keep in the months between.
  2. The mix of cups. One mug type points to a sublimation press or a PeriH; glass, steel and porcelain together point to a helical UV printer.
  3. Pre-treatment. Glass and glazed cups usually need cleaning and flame, plasma or primer treatment, which is equipment and floor space of its own.
  4. People. Artwork set-up, colour management and machine care need a trained operator, not a part-time task.
  5. A trial on your own cups. Send the cups you sell; the trial gives a printed sample, a measured net speed for your artwork, an ink consumption figure and an adhesion result.

If those do not add up yet, Sun Studio prints the same cups as a service in Dubai on its LSINC PeriOne and PeriQ360, with no minimum order: see its guides to custom water bottles, tumblers and flasks and custom qahwa cups, and its branded bar and event glassware project. Many buyers start there and buy a machine once the orders are proven. For gifting deadlines, our corporate gifting printing guide plans National Day, Ramadan and Eid backwards from the date.

What drinkware buyers in the UAE and Saudi Arabia search for

Google Ads Keyword Planner (October 2025 to September 2026) shows two different markets. In the UAE the searches are in English and mostly about machines and services: about 90 a month each for mug printing machine, cup printing machine and cup printing, 110 for coffee cup printing and 70 for glassware printing. In Saudi Arabia they are in Arabic and several times larger: about 1,000 a month for طباعة اكواب (cup printing), 720 for طباعة على الاكواب, 210 for طابعة اكواب (cup printer) and 140 for طباعة على فناجين القهوة (printing on coffee cups), up 143% on the year before.

The qahwa cup is the regional product in that list, and it is a porcelain cup with no coating and no handle: exactly the item a sublimation press cannot print and a cylindrical UV printer can.

Frequently asked questions

What machine is used to print on mugs?

Most printed mugs in the UAE are made with a sublimation heat press, which presses a printed transfer into a mug sold with a polyester coating. Plain, dark or uncoated mugs are printed with a UV direct-to-object printer, such as the LSINC PeriH for handled mugs, which jets ink and white straight onto the ceramic.

Can a sublimation mug press print on glass cups or qahwa cups?

Only on glasses and cups sold with a sublimation coating. Ordinary drinking glasses and most porcelain qahwa cups are uncoated, and sublimation has no white ink, so they are printed with a UV direct-to-object printer instead.

Can a UV printer print on a mug with a handle?

A helical cylindrical printer cannot turn a mug through its handle. LSINC built the PeriH for handled mugs: it indexes the mug, prints in a single pass at 600 dpi and prints up to 16 mm onto the handle. It takes mugs 61 to 127 mm across and is specified for opaque materials.

Can you print white on clear glass cups?

Yes, with UV direct-to-object printing. White ink can be printed on its own, as lettering or line art, or under colour so the design stays bright on clear glass. A sublimation press has no white ink.

How much does a mug printing machine cost in the UAE?

Sublimation mug heat presses listed by UAE sellers on 28 October 2026 ranged from about AED 240 for a single-mug press to about AED 5,000 for multi-station presses, before the printer and consumables. Industrial UV direct-to-object printers such as the LSINC range are quoted per configuration, after a print trial on your own cups.

Are UV-printed cups dishwasher safe?

It depends on the cup, the pre-treatment, the curing and any varnish, so it is tested rather than promised. LSINC publishes no dishwasher rating. Sun Studio reports that in its own wash tests, prints on glass, steel tumblers and porcelain gahwa cups lasted more than 60 dishwasher cycles; test a printed sample in your own machine before a run.

Can a cylindrical printer print paper coffee cups?

Not usually. Most paper cups are printed flat on paperboard by flexographic or offset printing before they are cut and formed. Cylindrical UV printers decorate finished rigid cups made of glass, ceramic, porcelain or steel.

Where can I get mugs, tumblers and qahwa cups printed in Dubai without buying a machine?

Sun Studio, the PRO TECHnology group's print studio in Al Quoz, Dubai, prints glasses, tumblers, flasks and qahwa cups on LSINC PeriOne and PeriQ360 printers, with no minimum order.

Who sells LSINC cup and mug printers in the UAE and Saudi Arabia?

PRO TECHnology in Dubai, LSINC's exclusive dealer for the Middle East and North Africa since 7 December 2023, supplies, installs, trains and supports the PeriOne, PeriQ360, Perivallo360m and PeriH across the UAE, Saudi Arabia and the region.
