Printing on Glass: Does It Need Primer, Plasma, or Nothing at All?

The honest answer is that nobody can tell you before it is tested. UV inks often struggle to adhere to glass, which is why ink manufacturers sell glass primers at all. But 'all glass needs primer' and 'UV ink sticks to glass fine' are both wrong. This guide explains the options, what each one actually does, and the test that settles it.

Why glass is the difficult one

Most substrates give ink something to grip: a texture, a porous layer, a coating. Glass gives it almost nothing. Marabu states that UV-curable digital printing inks often fail to adhere sufficiently to glass, which is precisely why glass primers exist as a product category.

Nothing to key into

A smooth, low energy, chemically inert surface is the hardest case for any ink to bond to.

It looks fine on day one

A print resting on glass passes visual inspection immediately and fails weeks later in handling or cleaning.

Coatings change everything

Coated, frosted, tinted and back-painted glass all behave differently. The word glass is not a specification.

So does what is in the bottle

For perfume and cosmetics, alcohol contact is part of the test, not an afterthought.

Primer, plasma and plasma coating are three different things

These get used interchangeably and they should not be. Each does something distinct, and choosing between them is a technical decision, not a preference.

Chemical primer

Deposits an adhesion-promoting chemical layer between glass and ink. Marabu Primer P4 is described as an adhesion promoter for UV digital inks on glass, metal, ceramic and plastics.

Atmospheric plasma

Cleans off organic contamination and activates the surface, improving wetting. It changes surface condition rather than adding a chemical layer.

Plasma coating

A third route again, depositing an extremely thin functional layer, documented in the region of 8 to 20 nanometres, that acts as an adhesion-promoting interface.

Flame, Pyrosil and corona

All established industrial routes to the same goal, and all selected on test results rather than reputation.

Priming offline, before the parts reach the machine

You do not have to treat inline. Some primers are designed to be applied offline in bulk, which suits small items handled in quantity. The sequence is clean, prime, dry, then load, print and cure.

Start clean

The substrate has to be dry and free of grease and fingerprints. Cleaning is a separate step from treating, not a substitute for it.

Apply thinly

Primer is applied as a thin film. Marabu's P4 instructions give roughly 30 seconds drying time and around 5 minutes before further processing.

Respect the window

Primed parts have a processing window. Those timings belong to that specific primer, and another product will have different conditions.

Or treat inline

Plasma, flame, Pyrosil and corona modules can sit inline ahead of the print stage where volume justifies it.

The method that actually decides it

Every extra process step adds equipment, cost and another variable that can drift. The correct approach is to start with the minimum and add only what the test proves is necessary.

1. Print it untreated

Take the actual item and the actual ink, print it with no pre-treatment, and cure it normally. Establish the baseline.

2. Test properly

Cross hatch adhesion testing to ISO 2409, plus the chemical exposure the product will really see, such as alcohol or dishwasher cycles.

3. Add the minimum

If it fails, add one pre-treatment and retest. Do not stack primer, plasma and coating together and call the result a process.

4. Then fix the specification

Once a route passes, write it down: the exact substrate, ink, treatment, timings and test standard. That is your production spec.

Does glass need primer before UV printing?

Our printer keeps failing on glass. Who can actually fix it?

Take it to a studio that controls the whole chain. Will UV print survive alcohol on a perfume bottle?

Only if adhesion has been established for that specific combination. Alcohol in fragrance attacks a print that is resting on the glass rather than bonded into it, so alcohol exposure has to be part of the test protocol rather than something checked after the fact.
