What the LaCie partnership means for a buyer in the UAE and GCC

A distributor sits between the manufacturer and the customer, and the value of that position depends on what it actually does. For LaCie in the Middle East, PRO TECHnology does four things. It quotes and invoices locally, with a UAE tax invoice, so that a studio, agency, broadcaster, university or government department can buy through its normal procurement process. It advises before the sale, matching the drive to the workflow rather than to the price list. It supports the setup, which for a RAID enclosure means the RAID level, the format, the host computer’s ports and the daisy-chain plan. And it handles warranty and service questions locally, working with LaCie’s own support where a manufacturer replacement is needed.

That last point is where regional buying earns its keep. LaCie publishes its warranty terms and Rescue Data Recovery Services centrally, through Seagate, and the paperwork for a claim starts with the drive’s model and serial number. A buyer who purchased through us has a local contact who knows which model was supplied, when, and on which invoice, and that shortens a claim considerably.

Two decades of LaCie in the Middle East: 2006 to today

PRO TECHnology’s company history records 2006 as the year it was appointed exclusive LaCie distributor for MENA, alongside an agreement with 3D Systems for the UAE education market. LaCie was then an independent French company, best known for the orange Rugged drives that had been on film sets and photo shoots since 2005 and for desktop drives with cases by the designer Neil Poulton.

In May 2012 Seagate announced an agreement to acquire a controlling interest in LaCie, and on 3 August 2012 the two companies announced completion of the purchase of the shares held by Philippe Spruch and his affiliate, 64.5 per cent of LaCie’s outstanding shares, with a tender offer for the remainder to follow. LaCie has been Seagate’s brand for creative professionals ever since, and today its product pages, data sheets, manuals and warranty terms are published on seagate.com.

For PRO TECHnology the change of ownership did not change the work. LaCie stayed in the Distribution & Retail division’s portfolio, and the brand is also listed by the Enterprise IT division for corporate storage. Close to twenty years on, the customers are the same kinds of organisations: studios, agencies, broadcasters, photographers and production houses, together with corporate, government and education buyers, across the UAE, Saudi Arabia and the wider GCC.

LaCie, a Seagate brand: who makes the drives and who supports them

Seagate describes the position plainly on its creative-professional pages: creative professionals worldwide trust Seagate and LaCie for high-performance storage, and its external drives come with warranties and complimentary Rescue Data Recovery Services. In practice the split of responsibilities is this. Seagate designs and builds the drives, publishes the specifications and sets the warranty and Rescue terms. PRO TECHnology supplies them in the region, advises on the choice, supports the setup and handles the local side of warranty and service.

• Specifications are always LaCie’s own, from the data sheet or the Seagate product page. Our product guides quote them with the document number and note where a figure needs a caveat, such as the Rugged SSD Pro5 not being supported for full performance on a Thunderbolt 3 port.
• Warranty is LaCie’s limited warranty by model, tied to the serial number: three years on the Rugged USB-C, five years on the Rugged SSD Pro5, the 2big Dock and the 8big Pro5.
• Rescue Data Recovery Services are included with eligible drives for the plan period, but Seagate notes that the service is not offered in every country. We check LaCie’s stated terms for the customer’s country and model before the purchase rather than after a failure.
• Local support means pre-sales advice, setup support and warranty handling from the Distribution & Retail division in Dubai, with Saudi customers served through PRONEXT in Riyadh.

The LaCie range PRO TECHnology supplies, with a guide to each

The current LaCie line-up covers three jobs: carrying footage safely, working from a fast SSD, and holding a studio’s projects on a RAID. The models below are the ones our guides cover in detail. The figures are LaCie’s, from its data sheets, and supply of each model and capacity in the region is confirmed at quotation.

Beyond those four, the range includes the Rugged SSD (USB 3.2 Gen 2, up to 4TB), the Portable SSD and the Mobile Drive for everyday carry, the 1big Dock single-drive desktop unit with card readers, and the 2big RAID without the dock features. The Rugged SSD Pro5 is the one to specify with care: it needs a Thunderbolt 5 port for the speeds it is sold on, and LaCie says a Thunderbolt 3 connection is not supported for full performance. On a Mac it runs at the older port’s speed; on Windows LaCie lists Thunderbolt 3 as unsupported. The LaCie range page has the overview of every family.

Pre-sales advice: matching the LaCie drive to the workflow

Most wrong purchases in this category are not bad products; they are the right product for a different job. A 5TB Rugged USB-C is excellent for carrying a day’s footage and archiving it, and a poor choice for editing 4K from directly, because a hard drive tops out at 130MB/s. A Rugged SSD Pro5 is a superb scratch drive on a Thunderbolt 5 laptop and an expensive way to get Thunderbolt 3 speeds on an older one. A 2big Dock suits a single editor’s desk; an 8big Pro5 suits a shared project store that must survive a drive failure and rebuild while people keep working.

Before quoting, we ask a short list of questions: the camera formats and data rates, how much footage a project generates, which computers and ports the drives will connect to, whether the storage moves between locations, how many people need access at once, and what the backup and archive plan is. The answers usually point to one or two models and to the right capacity. Setup support for RAID and studio storage

For the RAID enclosures, the sale is the easy part. The decisions that matter come at installation: RAID 0, 1, 5, 6 or 10 and what each means for usable capacity and fault tolerance; exFAT for a drive shared between Mac and Windows or APFS for a Mac-only edit suite; whether the host’s Thunderbolt port will deliver the rated speed; how monitors, card readers and a second enclosure daisy-chain from one cable; and how the array will be backed up, because a RAID is not a backup. Warranty, Rescue Data Recovery and local service

LaCie’s warranty is a limited warranty on the drive, for a period that depends on the model, and it is LaCie’s terms that apply. What changes with a regional purchase is the handling. PRO TECHnology’s Distribution & Retail division keeps the record of what was supplied and when, identifies the model and serial number for a claim, and works with LaCie’s support where a manufacturer replacement is needed, for example a failed disk in a 2big Dock or 8big Pro5 that is still under warranty. The division’s service centre in Dubai is the first point of contact for warranty and service questions on the brands it distributes, LaCie included.

Rescue Data Recovery Services is Seagate’s data-recovery plan, included with eligible Seagate and LaCie drives for a set period and started through Seagate’s Rescue lookup tool, which recognises LaCie serial numbers. LaCie’s data sheets add that the service is not available in all countries. Our advice is to have that confirmed for your country and model before purchase, in writing, and to keep the invoice with the serial number: a data-recovery plan you cannot use is worth nothing on the day a drive fails.

• Keep the tax invoice: it carries the model number and the serial number that a warranty or Rescue claim starts from.
• Keep the data sheet’s document number for the specification you were quoted, so a later question about speed or capacity has a reference.
• Record the RAID level and format chosen at setup; a replacement drive must match the array it joins.
• If you registered the drive with Seagate, keep that record with the invoice.
