# macOS 27 Golden Gate Is Out: What to Check on Company and Studio Macs Before You Upgrade

Published 8 October 2026 · PRO TECHnology Enterprise IT

Apple released macOS 27 Golden Gate on 14 September 2026 for Apple-silicon Macs only, and on Macs running 27.0 the legacy MDM software update controls, deferrals included, no longer work. Move update control to declarative software update management: its longest deferral is 90 days from Apple’s release, about 13 December 2026 for 27.0. Back up RAID arrays, then install Wacom driver 6.4.14-2 or newer and the LaCie software Seagate lists, and after each Mac upgrades to macOS 27, reinstall Rosetta for Intel-based tools such as Kanguru’s Defender software. Requirements were checked on vendor pages as of 8 October 2026 (Kanguru’s as recorded in our Defender guides); re-check at macOS 27.1.

- **Released** macOS 27.0 on 14 Sep 2026; 27.0.1 on 28 Sep 2026

- **Runs on** Apple-silicon Macs only; Intel Macs stay on macOS 26 or earlier

- **Update control** Legacy deferrals stop on 27.0; a declarative deferral lasts at most 90 days from release (about 13 Dec 2026 for 27.0)

- **Checked** Vendor pages as of 8 Oct 2026; re-check at macOS 27.1

Our diagram cover for this checklist: check, fix, then upgrade in waves. Every requirement, with its source and the date we checked it, is in the first table below.

## Key takeaways

- macOS 27 runs only on Macs with Apple silicon, so every Intel Mac stays on macOS 26 or earlier. Apple released 27.0 on 14 September 2026 and 27.0.1 on 28 September 2026.
- On a Mac running 27.0, Apple says legacy MDM update commands, queries, recommended cadence and restrictions such as deferrals no longer function. Set up declarative software update management before the first Mac upgrades. Its longest deferral is 90 days from Apple’s release, so for macOS 27.0 it ends around 13 December 2026.
- Wacom pen displays need driver 6.4.14-2 or newer, with permissions granted within 30 minutes of installing and a restart. The Cintiq 13HD, 22HD and 27QHD (DTK/DTH-1300, 2200 and 2700) have no driver for macOS 26 or 27; the Cintiq 22 DTK-2260 is supported.
- Seagate lists LaCie RAID Manager 3.3.28 or later for the 8big Pro5 and Toolkit 2.47.x or later on macOS 27. Older units missing from its table have not been tested. Back up each array and test a restore before updating either.
- Upgrading to macOS 27 does not restore Rosetta, which Kanguru’s Defender SSD350 and HDD350 software and other Intel-based tools need on Apple silicon. Reinstall it through your MDM after each Mac upgrades to macOS 27.
- Adobe’s upcoming version 27 of Premiere, After Effects, Media Encoder and Audition needs Apple silicon and macOS 15 or later; Intel Macs can stay on version 26.x.
- Everything here was checked on vendor pages as of 8 October 2026. Re-check at macOS 27.1.

## What macOS 27 changes for company and studio Macs

macOS 27 Golden Gate runs only on Apple-silicon Macs, ends Apple’s legacy MDM software update controls on any Mac running 27.0, and does not restore Rosetta after the upgrade. Wacom pen displays, LaCie RAID units and Kanguru encrypted drives each need a newer driver, a newer management app or a Rosetta reinstall. The table lists every requirement with its vendor source and the date we checked it.

Apple released macOS 27 on 14 September 2026 and macOS 27.0.1 on 28 September 2026, according to its [security releases table](https://support.apple.com/en-us/100100). Apple’s [enterprise notes for macOS 27](https://support.apple.com/en-us/148830), published on 28 September, carry the two changes that matter most to IT teams: the end of legacy software update management and the fact that an upgrade does not restore Rosetta. The sections after the table take each row in turn.

| Product or setting | What macOS 27 needs | Vendor source and date | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Mac itself | Apple silicon. Apple lists MacBook Neo (2026), MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and Mac mini with Apple silicon (2020 and later), iMac with Apple silicon (2021 and later), Mac Studio (2022 and later) and Mac Pro with Apple silicon (2023). | [Apple security releases](https://support.apple.com/en-us/100100) and [macOS 27 page](https://www.apple.com/os/macos/); released 14 Sep 2026 | Find every Intel Mac first; those stay on macOS 26 or earlier. |
| MDM software update controls | Declarative software update management. Legacy update commands, queries, recommended cadence settings and restrictions such as deferrals no longer function on 27.0. | [Apple enterprise notes for macOS 27](https://support.apple.com/en-us/148830), 28 Sep 2026 | Build and test declarative deferral and enforcement now. Deferrals count from Apple’s release date, so the 90-day maximum for 27.0 ends around 13 December 2026. |
| FileWave server and client | FileWave 16.4.1 supports the public release of macOS 27 and lists macOS 27 (Apple Silicon) under Fully Tested by QA. | [FileWave KB: FileWave Version 16.4.1](https://kb.filewave.com/books/downloads/page/filewave-version-1641), read 8 Oct 2026 | Run 16.4.1 or later before Macs upgrade. Servers older than 16.0 must first upgrade to a 16.0.x to 16.2.x release, per FileWave’s 16.4.1 notes. On another MDM, check its own macOS 27 support note. |
| Wacom pen displays and tablets | Driver 6.4.14-2 or newer, created for macOS 13 to 15, 26 and 27. Permissions granted within 30 minutes of installing, then a restart. | [Wacom 6.4.14-2 release notes](https://cdn.wacom.com/u/productsupport/drivers/mac/professional/releasenotes/Mac_6.4.14-2.html), 22 Sep 2026; [Wacom macOS 27 article](https://support.wacom.com/hc/en-us/articles/43537850453527-Wacom-Driver-for-macOS-27-Golden-Gate-Installation-Troubleshooting-Steps), published 16 Sep 2026, read 8 Oct 2026 | Have 6.4.14-2 ready in your MDM for the upgrade, and check each model number against Wacom’s list. |
| Cintiq 13HD, 22HD and 27QHD (DTK/DTH-1300, DTK/DTH-2200, DTK/DTH-2700) | No Wacom driver for macOS 26 or 27 lists them. Their last driver, 6.4.10-3, was created for macOS 12 to 15. | [Wacom 6.4.11-1 notes](https://cdn.wacom.com/u/productsupport/drivers/mac/professional/releasenotes/Mac_6.4.11-1.html), 17 Sep 2025; [6.4.11-2 notes](https://cdn.wacom.com/u/productsupport/drivers/mac/professional/releasenotes/Mac_6.4.11-2.html), 7 Oct 2025; [6.4.10-3 notes](https://cdn.wacom.com/u/productsupport/drivers/mac/professional/releasenotes/Mac_6.4.10-3.html), 4 Jun 2025 | Keep them on a Mac that stays on macOS 15 or earlier, or plan replacement. |
| LaCie 8big Pro5 | LaCie RAID Manager 3.3.28 or later. Seagate’s macOS 26 page asked for 3.2.8 or later. | [Seagate LaCie macOS 27 page](https://www.seagate.com/gb/en/support/kb/lacie/lacie-compatibility-with-macos-golden-gate/), checked 8 Oct 2026 (no date on page) | Back up the array and test a restore, then update RAID Manager, before the OS upgrade. |
| LaCie 2big RAID and 2big Dock | Toolkit 2.47.x or later; Seagate’s rows say to use Toolkit to manage RAID. | [Seagate LaCie macOS 27 page](https://www.seagate.com/gb/en/support/kb/lacie/lacie-compatibility-with-macos-golden-gate/), checked 8 Oct 2026 | Update Toolkit on every Mac that manages the unit. |
| LaCie 6big Thunderbolt 3 and other legacy multi-bay units | LaCie RAID Manager v2 (LRM) 2.10.0.x or later, which Seagate lists as legacy software for select Thunderbolt 2 and Thunderbolt 3 multi-bay devices, including the 6big Thunderbolt 3. | [Seagate LaCie macOS 27 page](https://www.seagate.com/gb/en/support/kb/lacie/lacie-compatibility-with-macos-golden-gate/), checked 8 Oct 2026 | Match the exact model to Seagate’s row before upgrading the host Mac. |
| LaCie 12big Thunderbolt 3, 5big Thunderbolt 2 and 8big Thunderbolt 2 | Not in Seagate’s macOS 27 table, which says unlisted older drives may work but have not been tested. Seagate also strongly recommends avoiding RAID rebuilds on Apple-silicon Macs with a 12big Thunderbolt 3, because the computer may crash, which could lead to lost data. | [Seagate LaCie macOS 27 page](https://www.seagate.com/gb/en/support/kb/lacie/lacie-compatibility-with-macos-golden-gate/), checked 8 Oct 2026; [Seagate: LaCie RAID and Apple silicon](https://www.seagate.com/gb/en/support/kb/lacie/raid-storage-and-apple-silicon-macs/), checked 8 Oct 2026 | Test on a spare Mac with a verified backup, or keep the host Mac on its current macOS. Seagate suggests considering disconnecting a 12big as soon as a rebuild begins, because a rebuild can continue without a computer. |
| Kanguru Defender SSD350 and HDD350 | Rosetta, which Kanguru’s software needs on Apple silicon. Apple says an upgrade to macOS 27 does not restore Rosetta if it was installed before. | Kanguru requirements as listed in our [SSD350](https://www.protechnology.ae/kanguru-defender-ssd350-encrypted-external-ssd) and [HDD350](https://www.protechnology.ae/kanguru-defender-hdd350-encrypted-backup-drive) guides; [Apple](https://support.apple.com/en-us/148830), 28 Sep 2026 | Reinstall Rosetta through your MDM straight after the upgrade, before users plug in a drive. |
| Other Intel-based apps and tools | Rosetta, available up to macOS 27. From macOS 28 it will work only for certain older, unmaintained games. | [Apple: Using Intel-based apps on a Mac with Apple silicon](https://support.apple.com/en-us/102527), 21 Sep 2026 | List Intel-based apps on each Mac and ask each vendor for an Apple-silicon version. |
| Adobe Premiere, After Effects, Media Encoder and Audition | From version 27.0, Apple silicon (M1 or later) running macOS 15 or later. Intel Macs can keep installing and using 26.x. | [Adobe community notice](https://community.adobe.com/announcements-504/important-notice-end-of-support-for-intel-based-macs-in-upcoming-v27-releases-1634129), 27 Jul 2026 (no version 27 release date given); [system requirement notice](https://community.adobe.com/announcements-504/important-notice-upcoming-system-requirement-changes-in-v27-0-1639158), 27 Aug 2026 | Keep Intel edit seats on 26.x and plan their replacement. |
| Sony Optical Disc Archive Software | Sony states it does not support Apple-silicon Macs (as of October 2023); the last Mac version is 5.5.1. macOS 27 runs only on Apple silicon. | [Sony Japan ODA software page](https://www.sony.jp/oda/application/), read 8 Oct 2026 | Keep the ODA host Mac on its current macOS and plan the archive’s move; see our [ODA next-steps guide](https://www.protechnology.ae/sony-optical-disc-archive-discontinued-next-steps). |

Checked on each vendor’s own page as of 8 October 2026. Seagate’s LaCie pages show no publication date, so we cite the day we read them. Vendors revise these pages as their testing continues: re-check at macOS 27.1 and before each upgrade batch.

## Which Macs cannot take macOS 27

Every Intel Mac. Apple’s compatibility list for macOS 27 contains only Apple-silicon models, starting with the 2020 MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and Mac mini, and FileWave’s knowledge base states that macOS 26 was the last release to support Intel hardware. Intel Macs stay on macOS 26 or earlier, so list them before planning anything else.

Apple’s [macOS 27 page](https://www.apple.com/os/macos/) lists these compatible Macs:

- MacBook Neo (2026)
- MacBook Air with Apple silicon (2020 and later)
- MacBook Pro with Apple silicon (2020 and later)
- iMac with Apple silicon (2021 and later)
- Mac mini with Apple silicon (2020 and later)
- Mac Studio (2022 and later)
- Mac Pro with Apple silicon (2023)

FileWave customers can split the fleet with two inventory reports from FileWave’s [knowledge base](https://kb.filewave.com/books/macos/page/find-macs-compatible-with-macos-27-using-inventory-reports), macos27_compatible.json and macos27_incompatible.json, which reproduce Apple’s final list as checked on 12 September 2026. FileWave notes that they check hardware only, not free disk space, application compatibility or FileWave’s own support status. With any MDM, reconcile the result with what is in use day to day; our guide to [device and software inventory](https://www.protechnology.ae/it-asset-inventory-device-software-uae-gcc) covers that reconciliation.

Intel Macs shape more than the OS decision. They fix the oldest driver and application versions you must keep supporting, and some vendors draw the same line: Adobe’s version 27 video apps need Apple silicon, and Sony states its ODA software does not support it, as covered below. On 28 September 2026 Apple released macOS Tahoe 26.7.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.8.1 on the same day as 27.0.1, so keep each Intel Mac on the newest release Apple publishes for its version.

When Intel Macs are due for replacement, PRO TECHnology, which was an Apple Authorised Reseller from 2000, today helps business clients source Mac, iPad and iPhone devices; see [Apple devices for business](https://www.protechnology.ae/enterprise-and-corporate-it-solutions#apple).

## Holding back the upgrade when legacy deferrals no longer work

Apple’s [enterprise notes](https://support.apple.com/en-us/148830) of 28 September 2026 say legacy software update management “no longer functions in all 27.0 operating systems”, deferrals included, and tell IT teams to use declarative software update management instead. Its deferrals count from Apple’s release date, so for macOS 27.0 even the 90-day maximum ends around 13 December 2026. Build and test the new configurations before any production Mac reaches 27.0.

Apple had flagged the change in advance. In its [macOS Tahoe 26.0 notes](https://support.apple.com/en-us/124963), Apple said that software update management using MDM commands, restrictions, the com.apple.SoftwareUpdate payload and queries “is deprecated and will be removed next year”. On Macs running 27.0, that removal has now happened.

### The declarative settings that replace deferrals

Apple’s [Software Update settings declarative configuration](https://support.apple.com/guide/deployment/dep0578d8b8a/web) gives macOS three separate deferrals, each from 1 to 90 days. Apple counts the days from the release, not from the day the setting reaches the Mac: upgrades appear “only after the specified delay, following the release of the software upgrade”. FileWave’s [deferral article](https://kb.filewave.com/books/software-updates-apple/page/defer-apple-os-updates), written for the legacy Restrictions payload, describes the same counting rule: “The defer timer starts on Apple’s release date for each individual update, not on the day you assign the profile.” macOS 27.0 came out on 14 September 2026, so as of 8 October 2026 a 30-day deferral runs out around 14 October and even the 90-day maximum runs out around 13 December 2026. The configuration needs macOS 15 or later. It also needs supervision, except for the enforcement keys and the beta OfferPrograms keys.

- **MajorPeriodInDays** Defers major upgrades, such as macOS 26 to macOS 27, by 1 to 90 days, counted from Apple’s release of the upgrade.

- **MinorPeriodInDays** Defers minor updates within a major version by 1 to 90 days, counted from the release of each update.

- **SystemPeriodInDays** Defers updates that are not operating system updates by 1 to 90 days, counted from their release.

- **AllowStandardUserOSUpdates** If set to false, Apple says “only administrators can perform updates and upgrades”. On Macs where staff are standard users, this keeps the upgrade with IT once a deferral has run out. Like the deferrals, it needs supervision and macOS 15 or later. It also stops standard users installing minor and security updates themselves, so pair it with enforced minor updates from your MDM.

- **Enforced update** Apple’s [deployment guide](https://support.apple.com/guide/deployment/depd30715cbb/web) says organisations can enforce specific updates at a chosen time regardless of configured deferrals. It adds that over-the-air updates usually stay available for up to 180 days.

### What FileWave documents for macOS 27 updates

FileWave added DDM software update management in [version 15.4.0](https://kb.filewave.com/books/software-updates-apple/page/how-apple-os-update-management-evolved-in-filewave). Its [software update article](https://kb.filewave.com/books/software-updates-apple/page/apple-mdm-os-software-updates) describes DDM Software Update Filesets in these words: “DDM lets FileWave declare the required update state and deadline while the device downloads, prepares, installs, and reports progress.” That covers the enforcement side: a target version and a deadline. The same article warns: “For a DDM Software Update Fileset, Activate files at is the Force Reboot time. If it is not set, it defaults to the time the assignment is created.” Apple’s [deployment guide](https://support.apple.com/guide/deployment/depd30715cbb/web) adds that if the user has not installed the update by the enforcement time, macOS “force quits all open apps (regardless of whether any documents are open and unsaved)”. Always set the time yourself, outside working hours, and tell users to save their work before it.

For holding an upgrade back, FileWave’s [Defer Apple Software Updates](https://kb.filewave.com/books/software-updates-apple/page/defer-apple-os-updates) article, as read on 8 October 2026, describes the Restrictions payload of a configuration profile (“Defer major macOS updates for”, 1 to 90 days) and does not mention macOS 27. Its [installer-blocking article](https://kb.filewave.com/books/software-updates-apple/page/fileset-to-block-apple-install-macos-applications) says that only deferral stops users upgrading through Software Update. For the macOS 27 installer app itself, the same article says to set MinimumBlockedVersion to 22, not 27, because the production Golden Gate installer’s app version is 22.0.02. FileWave notes that this does not catch the beta seed installer and was not an end-to-end blocking test, and says to pilot the Fileset on your target Macs first. Apple’s note covers exactly that kind of restriction on 27.0 systems, so confirm the declarative deferral route for your FileWave version with FileWave support before relying on it.

**What Apple has not said.** Apple’s macOS 27 notes describe Macs already running 27.0. Neither they nor the macOS 26 notes say how a legacy deferral profile behaves on a Mac still running macOS 26 when macOS 27 is offered. Do not assume either way: look at Software Update on a test Mac running macOS 26 with your current profile, and move to the declarative configuration whatever you find.

If your MDM cannot send declarative software update configurations, Apple’s note leaves it no way to defer or enforce updates on Macs running 27.0, so check your MDM vendor’s macOS 27 notes before the first Mac upgrades. If that leads to a change of MDM, our guide to [moving devices to a new MDM without wiping them](https://www.protechnology.ae/mdm-migration-without-wiping-devices) explains which Macs qualify.

With any MDM that supports declarative software update management, a workable sequence is:

1. List which Macs are supervised and run macOS 15 or later. Only those can take the declarative deferral.
2. Create a Software Update settings configuration with MajorPeriodInDays set to 90, the maximum, and assign it to every supervised Mac outside the pilot group. For macOS 27.0 this holds the upgrade until around 13 December 2026, whatever day you apply it, so schedule the pilot to finish well before then. Where staff are standard users, also set AllowStandardUserOSUpdates to false so that the upgrade stays with IT after the hold ends, and enforce minor and security updates on those Macs, because standard users can no longer install them.
3. Give the pilot group an enforced target version and deadline, so it reaches macOS 27 on your schedule rather than the user’s; set the deadline outside working hours, because macOS force-quits open apps at that time.
4. On a deferred test Mac, check that Software Update does not offer macOS 27; on a pilot Mac, check that the enforced upgrade installs at the set time.
5. When the pilot passes, release the remaining Macs in batches with enforced deadlines, each set outside working hours. Our guide to [piloting and verifying a software rollout](https://www.protechnology.ae/remote-software-deployment-uae-gcc) covers batching and checks.

## Wacom pen displays and tablets on macOS 27

macOS 27 needs Wacom driver 6.4.14-2 or newer, released on 22 September 2026 and “[Created for macOS 13-15, 26 & 27](https://cdn.wacom.com/u/productsupport/drivers/mac/professional/releasenotes/Mac_6.4.14-2.html)”. The Cintiq 13HD, 22HD and 27QHD (DTK/DTH-1300, 2200 and 2700) were dropped from driver 6.4.11-1 of 17 September 2025 and appear on no driver list for macOS 26 or 27, so keep them on a Mac that stays on macOS 15 or earlier.

Model names are the trap. Wacom’s 6.4.11-1 and 6.4.11-2 notes list the dropped DTK-2200 as “Cintiq 22”, the same name Wacom gives the Cintiq 22 DTK-2260, which is still supported. The current Cintiq models appear in the 6.4.14-2 list as “Cintiq M” (DTK168) and “Cintiq L” (DTK246), which our Wacom guide lists as the Cintiq 16 and Cintiq 24 of 2025. Check the model number on each unit, not the name.

From Wacom’s release notes for [6.4.14-2](https://cdn.wacom.com/u/productsupport/drivers/mac/professional/releasenotes/Mac_6.4.14-2.html) (22 September 2026), [6.4.11-1](https://cdn.wacom.com/u/productsupport/drivers/mac/professional/releasenotes/Mac_6.4.11-1.html) (17 September 2025), [6.4.11-2](https://cdn.wacom.com/u/productsupport/drivers/mac/professional/releasenotes/Mac_6.4.11-2.html) (7 October 2025) and [6.4.10-3](https://cdn.wacom.com/u/productsupport/drivers/mac/professional/releasenotes/Mac_6.4.10-3.html) (4 June 2025), as of 8 October 2026. For a model not shown here, check the compatible products list in the 6.4.14-2 notes.

### Installing 6.4.14-2 on a Mac running macOS 27

Wacom’s [macOS 27 installation article](https://support.wacom.com/hc/en-us/articles/43537850453527-Wacom-Driver-for-macOS-27-Golden-Gate-Installation-Troubleshooting-Steps) (published 16 September 2026, read 8 October 2026) sets out this order:

1. Confirm the device is supported by 6.4.14-2 or newer.
2. Install the driver and choose Allow at each permission prompt: Accessibility for Wacom IOManager, Input Monitoring for WacomTabletDriver, and Allow in the Background.
3. Grant the permissions within 30 minutes of installing. Outside that window, Wacom says to uninstall the driver and install it again.
4. Restart the Mac. Wacom says the restart is needed for the driver to start working.
5. On some devices, such as Cintiq Pro, allow the use of a “hub” when macOS asks.

Because 6.4.14-2 is also created for macOS 26, it can go on before the OS upgrade. Wacom’s article describes a fresh install on macOS 27, so on a Mac that already had the driver, check the three permissions after the upgrade, and if the pen does not respond, reinstall the driver and follow the steps above.

One behaviour change needs telling to users. The 6.4.14-2 notes say: “Application-specific settings are no longer automatically applied.” The change first appeared in [6.4.14-1](https://cdn.wacom.com/u/productsupport/drivers/mac/professional/releasenotes/Mac_6.4.14-1.html) (26 August 2026), which was created for macOS 13 to 15 and 26 only, so a Mac on macOS 27 needs 6.4.14-2 itself. Designers who keep different pen settings for different applications should try their set-up on a pilot Mac first.

### Managed Macs and the Accessibility permission

Apple’s macOS 27 notes change how MDM-granted privacy permissions behave. If MDM applies the deprecated Accessibility key in a Privacy Preferences Policy Control payload, the user sees a notification once for each configured app, and “the user can disable accessibility permissions granted by device management in System Settings”. Apple also adds a tccutil list command that reports current privacy authorisations on managed devices, and says apps can no longer access the local TCC database directly.

Apple does not mention Wacom, so the link is our inference: Wacom’s driver needs Accessibility, and on macOS 27 a user can switch off a permission your MDM granted. If a pen stops responding on a managed Mac, check Accessibility under Privacy and Security first, and use tccutil list to see what is granted. Any in-house script that reads the TCC database directly should be tested on a pilot Mac too.

To replace a Cintiq 13HD, 22HD or 27QHD, our [Wacom pen tablet and pen display guide](https://www.protechnology.ae/wacom-pen-tablets-pen-displays-uae) compares the current range. PRO TECHnology supplies Wacom pen tablets and pen displays and can pilot them on your own Macs, including driver deployment, before a studio-wide order.

## LaCie RAID and desktop storage: back up, then update the management software

Back up the array, then update LaCie’s management software before the Mac moves to macOS 27. As of 8 October 2026, Seagate’s macOS 27 page lists LaCie RAID Manager 3.3.28 or later for the 8big Pro5 and Toolkit 2.47.x or later, and says its compatibility statements cover Apple-silicon Macs only. Older units missing from the table may work but have not been tested.

The minimums have moved since macOS 26. Seagate’s [macOS 26 Tahoe page](https://www.seagate.com/gb/en/support/kb/lacie/lacie-compatibility-with-macos-tahoe/) asked for RAID Manager 3.2.8 or later for the 8big Pro5 and Toolkit 2.34.x or later, so a Mac that was correctly set up for Tahoe can still be below the [macOS 27 minimum](https://www.seagate.com/gb/en/support/kb/lacie/lacie-compatibility-with-macos-golden-gate/). Neither page shows a publication date, so we give the date we read them.

- **8big Pro5:** LaCie RAID Manager 3.3.28 or later; Seagate’s table says to use RAID Manager to manage RAID. Our [8big Pro5 guide](https://www.protechnology.ae/lacie-8big-pro5-thunderbolt-5-raid-uae) covers RAID levels and set-up.
- **2big RAID and 2big Dock:** Toolkit 2.47.x or later; Seagate’s rows for both say to use Toolkit to manage RAID. See our [2big Dock guide](https://www.protechnology.ae/lacie-2big-dock-thunderbolt-raid-card-reader-uae).
- **6big Thunderbolt 3:** Seagate’s row reads “Requires LRM v 2.10.0.x or later”. That is LaCie RAID Manager v2, which Seagate lists under legacy software as “Required for select Thunderbolt 2 and Thunderbolt 3 multi-bay LaCie devices.”
- **12big Thunderbolt 3, 5big Thunderbolt 2 and 8big Thunderbolt 2:** not in Seagate’s macOS 27 table. Seagate says “Older drives that are not listed in this table may work, but have not been tested.” Its separate [Apple-silicon article](https://www.seagate.com/gb/en/support/kb/lacie/raid-storage-and-apple-silicon-macs/) adds: “It is strongly recommended to avoid RAID rebuilds on Apple Silicon Mac computers with 12big Thunderbolt 3”, because the computer may crash, “which could lead to lost data”. Seagate suggests considering disconnecting the 12big as soon as a rebuild begins, as “A RAID rebuild can continue without connection to a computer.”

1. Back up the array to a separate device and check that files restore from it. Depending on its level, RAID can protect against a failed drive, but not against a failed upgrade or a deletion; see our guide to [backup and disaster recovery](https://www.protechnology.ae/data-backup-disaster-recovery-uae-business-continuity).
2. Update RAID Manager, Toolkit or LRM to the version Seagate lists for macOS 27, and confirm the unit and its arrays still appear.
3. Upgrade one Mac that uses the unit, open the management app and check every array before other Macs follow.
4. For a unit not in Seagate’s table, test on a spare Apple-silicon Mac with the backup at hand, or keep the host Mac on its current macOS.

PRO TECHnology has distributed LaCie in the Middle East since 2006. If a legacy unit is due for replacement, our [LaCie storage overview](https://www.protechnology.ae/lacie-professional-storage-uae) lists the current range.

## Rosetta after the upgrade: encrypted drives and Intel-only tools

Apple says: “If Rosetta was previously installed, it will [not be automatically restored](https://support.apple.com/en-us/148830) upon upgrading to macOS 27.” Any Intel-based software then needs Rosetta installed again, including the software Kanguru Defender SSD350 and HDD350 drives use on Apple-silicon Macs. Reinstall Rosetta through your MDM straight after each Mac upgrades to macOS 27, before users plug in a drive.

Our [Defender SSD350](https://www.protechnology.ae/kanguru-defender-ssd350-encrypted-external-ssd) and [Defender HDD350](https://www.protechnology.ae/kanguru-defender-hdd350-encrypted-backup-drive) guides list Kanguru’s requirement: macOS 11 or newer, with Rosetta on Macs with Apple silicon. Apple’s Rosetta article says installing it at the prompt needs an internet connection and the user’s macOS user name and password, so install it centrally rather than leaving it to the moment a drive is needed. Kanguru’s requirement, as our guides record it, says nothing specific about macOS 27, so test each Defender model on a pilot Mac running macOS 27 before the wider rollout.

### Reinstalling Rosetta with your MDM

- Apple’s [Rosetta article](https://support.apple.com/en-us/102527) gives the Terminal command softwareupdate --install-rosetta, followed by on-screen instructions. For an unattended MDM script, FileWave’s example script runs /usr/sbin/softwareupdate --install-rosetta --agree-to-license, which it describes as “a non-interactive install of Rosetta”.
- FileWave’s [knowledge base](https://kb.filewave.com/books/macos/page/apple-silicon-native-client-support-and-rosetta) says the FileWave Client (14.8 and later) runs natively on Apple silicon and that newly enrolled clients do not install Rosetta, so other software that needs it requires a Fileset. FileWave publishes an example script and Fileset for Apple-silicon Macs running macOS 11 through 27.
- The same article notes that the FileWave Administrator app still requires Rosetta 2, so include administrators’ Macs.
- Tie the install to the upgrade, for example by targeting Macs that report macOS 27, so that users do not meet the prompt.

### Find what still needs Rosetta before macOS 28

On macOS 27, open System Settings, then General, then About, and click Details next to Intel-based Apps. Apple says the list shows apps you recently used or that are installed in common locations, so also check plug-ins, helper tools and software that runs from an external drive, such as Kanguru Defender Manager, which runs from a read-only partition on the drive. Apple says Rosetta remains available on Apple-silicon Macs up to macOS 27; from macOS 28, “the next major macOS release”, it will work only for certain older, unmaintained games that rely on Intel-based frameworks. Every Intel-based tool, listed or not, needs an Apple-silicon version, or a plan, before any Mac moves beyond macOS 27. FileWave customers can pull a similar list for the whole fleet: the [FileWave 16.4.1 release notes](https://kb.filewave.com/books/downloads/page/filewave-version-1641) say that from version 16.4, inventory identifies each macOS application as Intel, Apple Silicon, Universal or iOS.

## Adobe video apps and other Intel-dependent studio software

Adobe’s [notice of 27 July 2026](https://community.adobe.com/announcements-504/important-notice-end-of-support-for-intel-based-macs-in-upcoming-v27-releases-1634129) says that from version 27.0, Premiere, After Effects, Media Encoder and Audition on the Mac will require Apple silicon (M1 or later). A second Adobe [notice of 27 August 2026](https://community.adobe.com/announcements-504/important-notice-upcoming-system-requirement-changes-in-v27-0-1639158) adds that version 27 needs macOS 15 (Sequoia) or later, so an Apple-silicon Mac still on macOS 14 must be updated first. Intel Macs can keep installing and using version 26.x.

Version 26.x keeps receiving security updates under Adobe’s standard support lifecycle, and both notices call version 27 upcoming without giving a release date. Adobe’s version 27 is the application version and is separate from macOS 27. Adobe names only those four video and audio applications, so do not assume the same cut-off for other Adobe apps until Adobe says so. In a mixed studio, plan for Intel edit seats to stay on 26.x while Apple-silicon seats move on, and agree which version shared projects are saved in before anyone upgrades.

PRO TECHnology is an authorised Adobe reseller and handles onboarding and Admin Console setup; our [Adobe licensing guide](https://www.protechnology.ae/adobe-reseller-uae) covers plans and the Admin Console.

### Sony Optical Disc Archive hosts

Sony’s [Japanese ODA software page](https://www.sony.jp/oda/application/) states that Optical Disc Archive Software does not support Mac products with Apple silicon (as of October 2023); the last Mac version is 5.5.1. Sony says nothing about macOS 27; our reading, from Apple’s Apple-silicon-only list, is that no Mac Sony supports for ODA software can run it. Keep an ODA host Mac on its current macOS; our guide to [next steps after Sony Optical Disc Archive](https://www.protechnology.ae/sony-optical-disc-archive-discontinued-next-steps) covers moving the archive, and our [Disk Archive page](https://www.protechnology.ae/disk-archive) covers its next home.

## A pilot-first upgrade order for company and studio Macs

Work in a fixed order: find the Macs that cannot upgrade, move update control to declarative management, back up and test a restore, update drivers and storage software while Macs are still on macOS 26, then upgrade a small pilot group covering every studio set-up. Reinstall Rosetta and re-grant permissions on the pilot, test each peripheral, and release the rest in batches.

1. **Inventory.** Record each Mac’s chip, macOS version and supervision status, the Wacom model numbers, LaCie units and Kanguru drives used with it, and its Intel-based apps.
2. **Hold the upgrade.** Apply a declarative MajorPeriodInDays deferral of up to 90 days to supervised Macs on macOS 15 or later (for macOS 27.0 it runs out around 13 December 2026), and check what Macs outside that group are offered.
3. **Ready the MDM.** Run an MDM release that supports macOS 27. For FileWave that is 16.4.1 or later; the 16.4.1 notes list macOS 27 (Apple Silicon) as fully tested by QA.
4. **Back up.** LaCie arrays and user data, with a test restore, before any storage software or OS change.
5. **Update vendor software before the upgrade.** Wacom driver 6.4.14-2 or newer, and LaCie RAID Manager 3.3.28, Toolkit 2.47.x or LRM 2.10.0.x or later, as Seagate lists for each unit.
6. **Pilot.** Upgrade a few Macs that between them cover each set-up: a Cintiq Pro workstation, an edit suite with its RAID unit, a Mac used with Defender drives and an administrator’s Mac.
7. **After each pilot upgrade.** Reinstall Rosetta where needed; check that Accessibility, Input Monitoring and Allow in the Background are on for the Wacom driver, and if the pen does not work, reinstall the driver, grant them within 30 minutes and restart; then check application-specific pen settings and the RAID arrays, and confirm privacy authorisations with tccutil list.
8. **Release in batches.** Use an enforced target version and deadline for each batch; set the deadline outside working hours, because macOS force-quits open apps at that time. Re-check the vendor pages in the first table at macOS 27.1.

### Printable checklist

| Check | Done when |
|---|---|
| Intel Macs identified | Every Mac is marked Apple silicon or Intel in your inventory, and Intel Macs are excluded from the upgrade. |
| Update control moved | A declarative deferral and an enforced target version have both been tested on Macs you control, and the pilot ends before the deferral does (around 13 December 2026 for 27.0). |
| MDM ready | Your MDM release lists macOS 27 support (FileWave: 16.4.1 or later). |
| Backups | A current backup of each array and of user data has been restored once as a test. |
| Wacom | Every model number is in the 6.4.14-2 list, the driver is deployed, and legacy Cintiqs are on Macs that stay on macOS 15 or earlier. |
| LaCie | RAID Manager 3.3.28 or later, Toolkit 2.47.x or later, or LRM 2.10.0.x or later is installed, as Seagate lists for each unit. |
| Intel-based apps | Every app in the Intel-based Apps list has an owner and a plan. |
| Rosetta | A Rosetta install runs after each Mac upgrades to macOS 27 on Macs that need it, including administrators’ Macs. |
| Privacy permissions | Wacom permissions are granted on each pilot Mac and confirmed with tccutil list. |
| Pilot sign-off | Each studio set-up has run on macOS 27 for an agreed period without new faults. |
| Re-check | The vendor pages in the first table have been re-read at macOS 27.1. |

**Hypothetical example.** A design and post-production studio in Dubai runs 14 Macs: ten with Apple silicon and four Intel iMacs, one of them still on macOS 15. Three designers use Cintiq Pro 27 (DTH271) displays, one uses a Cintiq 22HD (DTK-2200), one edit suite works from a LaCie 8big Pro5 attached to its Mac, and the finance team carries Kanguru Defender SSD350 drives.

The Intel iMacs stay off the upgrade, and the Cintiq 22HD moves to the iMac on macOS 15 until it is replaced. IT sets the maximum 90-day major-upgrade deferral on the Apple-silicon Macs, which holds macOS 27.0 until around 13 December 2026 because Apple counts from the 14 September release, updates its MDM to a release that supports macOS 27, backs up the 8big Pro5 and tests a restore, then pushes Wacom 6.4.14-2 and RAID Manager 3.3.28 before the upgrade. One designer’s Mac, the edit suite Mac and one finance laptop upgrade first. After each upgrade a script reinstalls Rosetta, the designer checks that the Wacom permissions are on, and the editor checks the array in RAID Manager. After a week of normal work, the other seven Apple-silicon Macs receive an enforced target version with an evening deadline, after users have been told to save their work.

## Frequently asked questions

**Can an Intel Mac be upgraded to macOS 27?**

No. Apple released macOS 27 Golden Gate on 14 September 2026 for Macs with Apple silicon only: MacBook Neo (2026), MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and Mac mini with Apple silicon (2020 and later), iMac with Apple silicon (2021 and later), Mac Studio (2022 and later) and Mac Pro with Apple silicon (2023). FileWave’s knowledge base states that macOS 26 was the last release to support Intel hardware. Keep each Intel Mac on the newest release Apple publishes for its version and plan its replacement.

**Do our existing MDM deferral profiles still work on macOS 27?**

Not on Macs running 27.0. Apple’s enterprise notes of 28 September 2026 say legacy software update restrictions, including deferrals, no longer function on 27.0 systems, and that IT teams should use declarative software update management. For Macs still on macOS 26, Apple’s pages do not say whether a legacy deferral profile keeps the macOS 27 upgrade hidden, so check on a test Mac and set up the declarative Software Update settings configuration, which defers major upgrades by 1 to 90 days, counted from Apple’s release date, on supervised Macs running macOS 15 or later. For macOS 27.0 even the maximum ends around 13 December 2026.

**Which Wacom driver version is needed for macOS 27?**

Driver 6.4.14-2 or newer. Wacom released 6.4.14-2 on 22 September 2026, created for macOS 13 to 15, 26 and 27; the earlier 6.4.14-1 was created for macOS 13 to 15 and 26 only. Wacom’s macOS 27 article says the permissions must be granted within 30 minutes of installing, or the driver has to be uninstalled and installed again, and that the Mac must then be restarted. Check each unit’s model number against the compatible products list in the release notes before upgrading.

**Will a Cintiq 22HD (DTK-2200) work on macOS 27?**

Not with any current Wacom driver. The Cintiq 22HD (DTK-2200 and DTH-2200) was dropped from Wacom driver 6.4.11-1 of 17 September 2025, and the 6.4.11-2 notes of 7 October 2025 repeat the list. Its last driver, 6.4.10-3, was created for macOS 12 to 15. The same applies to the Cintiq 13HD (DTK/DTH-1300) and the Cintiq 27QHD (DTK/DTH-2700). Wacom’s 6.4.11-1 and 6.4.11-2 notes call the dropped DTK-2200 “Cintiq 22”, a name Wacom also gives the Cintiq 22 DTK-2260, which driver 6.4.14-2 does support, so always check the model number on the unit.

**Why do Wacom per-application pen settings stop applying after the driver update?**

Because Wacom changed that behaviour. The 6.4.14-2 release notes say: “Application-specific settings are no longer automatically applied.” The change first appeared in 6.4.14-1 on 26 August 2026. Before upgrading studio Macs, find out which designers rely on settings that differ by application and try their set-up with the new driver on a pilot Mac.

**What has to be updated before a LaCie 8big Pro5 is used with macOS 27?**

LaCie RAID Manager, to version 3.3.28 or later. That is the requirement on Seagate’s macOS 27 compatibility page as of 8 October 2026; Seagate’s macOS 26 page asked only for 3.2.8 or later, so a Mac set up for macOS 26 may need a newer version. Seagate’s compatibility statements apply to Macs with Apple silicon only. Back up the array and test a restore first, then update RAID Manager, before upgrading the Mac it connects to.

**Why does Rosetta have to be installed again after upgrading to macOS 27?**

Apple’s enterprise notes for macOS 27 say that if Rosetta was installed before, it is not automatically restored when the Mac upgrades. Intel-based software then needs it installed again, and on Apple-silicon Macs the software for Kanguru Defender SSD350 and HDD350 drives is among the tools that need it. Reinstall Rosetta through your MDM straight after each Mac upgrades to macOS 27. Apple documents the command softwareupdate --install-rosetta, and FileWave’s example script and Fileset add --agree-to-license so it can run without a user present.

**Will Intel-based apps still run after macOS 27?**

Only in a limited way. Apple says Rosetta is available on Apple-silicon Macs up to macOS 27, and that from macOS 28, the next major release, it will work only for certain older, unmaintained games that rely on Intel-based frameworks. On macOS 27, open System Settings, then General, then About, and click Details next to Intel-based Apps to see what still depends on Rosetta, then ask each vendor for an Apple-silicon version.

**Can Premiere and After Effects version 27 run on an Intel Mac?**

No, according to Adobe. Adobe’s notice of 27 July 2026 says that from version 27.0 its video and audio apps on the Mac, Premiere, After Effects, Media Encoder and Audition, require Apple silicon (M1 or later), and a 27 August 2026 notice adds macOS 15 or later. Intel Macs can keep installing and using version 26.x, which continues to receive security updates under Adobe’s standard support lifecycle. Both notices call the version 27 releases upcoming, give no date and name no other apps.

**How long should a company wait before upgrading its Macs to macOS 27?**

There is no fixed number of days. Wait until every app, driver and storage tool your users depend on has a version its vendor lists for macOS 27, and a pilot group has used macOS 27 in daily work without new faults. Apple’s declarative deferral can hide a major upgrade for up to 90 days counted from Apple’s release date, so for macOS 27, released on 14 September 2026, the longest possible hold ends around 13 December 2026. An enforced update installs at the time you choose regardless of deferrals, and macOS force-quits open apps at that time, so set it outside working hours. Re-check the vendor pages listed in this advisory when macOS 27.1 is released.

## Plan your macOS 27 rollout

Tell us how many Macs you run, which are Intel and which have Apple silicon, which MDM you use, and the pen displays, storage and encrypted drives attached to them. We can demonstrate FileWave at our Business Bay showroom or at your offices, pilot Wacom pen displays on your own Macs including driver deployment, and help source Apple-silicon Macs where Intel models need replacing.
