# Managing Mac and Windows Laptops Together: A Practical Guide for UAE Businesses

Published 9 October 2026 · PRO TECHnology Enterprise IT

For UAE companies whose staff work on both Macs and Windows PCs: how a new laptop of each kind is set up, how software, self-service apps and updates reach both, what inventory can show, how remote staff and branch offices are handled, and how to evaluate one console for both before buying. It describes FileWave as PRO TECHnology, FileWave’s distributor and partner for the Middle East, deploys it.

- **New Macs** Apple Business and Automated Device Enrollment, supervised automatically

- **New Windows PCs** Windows Autopilot or Microsoft Entra join, with Entra ID P1 or P2; Intune not required

- **Software** FileWave Filesets on both; WinGet for Windows apps; a self-service Kiosk without admin rights

- **Updates** Declarative updates on macOS 14 and later; Windows Update policy and reporting

Macs and Windows PCs reach the same console by different routes: Apple’s enrolment for Macs, Microsoft Entra ID for Windows, and the FileWave Client on both.

## Key takeaways

- One console can manage both, but each platform joins by its own route: Macs through Apple Business and Automated Device Enrollment, Windows PCs through Microsoft Entra ID (manually or with Windows Autopilot) or the FileWave Client alone.
- Windows MDM enrolment needs Microsoft Entra ID P1 or P2, or a Microsoft 365 or similar bundle that includes it; Microsoft Intune is not required, and Windows Home editions cannot join.
- Software reaches both as FileWave Filesets, and the self-service Kiosk lets staff install approved apps without local administrator rights. Assigning to four hundred laptops takes the same steps as four, but testing, pilots and follow-up of failures grow with the fleet.
- macOS updates run through Apple’s declarative device management, which needs macOS 14 or later; Windows updates use Microsoft’s update policy over MDM, with update status reported for every enrolment type.
- Remote staff are managed wherever they can reach the FileWave server; branch offices can use Boosters to cache software and Windows updates. Remote lock and erase have conditions on each platform.
- Evaluate with a small mixed pilot and written success criteria, after checking Apple Business, Entra ID licensing and where the server will run.

## Onboarding a new laptop: Mac and Windows side by side

The goal is the same on both platforms: a new employee opens a sealed laptop, signs in, and finds it configured with the company’s settings and software. The route to it differs.

| Step | Mac | Windows PC |
|---|---|---|
| Register the device | Added to Apple Business at purchase by Apple, an Apple Authorised Reseller or carrier, or later with Apple Configurator | Registered for Windows Autopilot, ideally by the OEM, reseller, distributor or Microsoft partner |
| Point it at FileWave | Assign it to the FileWave server in Apple Business | Microsoft Entra automatic MDM enrolment pointed at FileWave |
| What the user does | Completes Setup Assistant; the Mac enrols and is supervised | Signs in with an Entra account; Windows joins Entra ID and enrols |
| Licensing needed | Apple Business (free) | Entra ID P1 or P2, or a bundle that includes it; Intune not required |
| FileWave Client | Can be installed automatically during enrolment | Installed as a package alongside MDM |
| Not covered | Macs never added to Apple Business enrol by hand instead | Windows Home editions cannot use this route |

Windows PCs can also be managed with the FileWave Client alone, without MDM, which still gives software deployment and inventory but not MDM commands such as a remote wipe.

Moving an existing fleet from another device-management service has its own rules: eligible Macs on macOS 26 or later can move without erasing, while Windows has no documented in-place path into FileWave, as our [MDM migration guide](https://www.protechnology.ae/mdm-migration-without-wiping-devices) explains.

## Software for both platforms, from one place

FileWave delivers software as Filesets: installer packages such as PKG on Mac and MSI on Windows, installers run with silent switches, or individual files. The same steps assign a Fileset to four laptops or four hundred, but the work around it does not stay flat: packaging, a pilot group, following up computers that fail or are offline, and exceptions all grow with the fleet.

- **Windows apps from WinGet.** FileWave can install and update applications through Microsoft’s Windows Package Manager. Automatic upgrades are switched on per package, and their downloads come from the publisher, not from a FileWave Booster.
- **Self-service Kiosk.** Staff on Macs and Windows PCs install IT-approved applications from the FileWave Kiosk without local administrator rights.
- **Self Healing for managed files.** With the Self Healing setting, FileWave checks the files a Fileset delivered, by default every 24 hours after the client starts and whenever an administrator asks, and puts back any that are missing or changed. It restores what FileWave delivered, not every application fault.

Our [remote software deployment guide](https://www.protechnology.ae/remote-software-deployment-uae-gcc) walks through pilots, staged rollouts and how to check what actually installed.

FileWave’s own graphic of cross-platform management. On mobile platforms and Chromebooks the routes and features differ from Macs and Windows PCs.

## Operating-system and application updates

- **macOS.** Since FileWave 15.4, macOS updates are managed only through Apple’s declarative device management, so FileWave can manage updates on macOS 14 and later. Our [macOS 27 upgrade checklist](https://www.protechnology.ae/macos-27-upgrade-checklist-business-studio-macs) is an example of planning a major version.
- **Windows.** FileWave applies Microsoft’s Update Policy CSP to MDM-enrolled PCs, offers a rule-based Windows patch policy from FileWave 16.2, and reports update status from supported PCs whatever their enrolment type. Updates download from Microsoft.
- **Third-party applications** are updated one by one, through an updated Fileset, the vendor’s own updater or, for Windows apps in a WinGet source, automatic upgrade. Plan which applications you will keep current and how you will check them.

## Inventory: what you can see about each laptop

The FileWave Client reports hardware and installed software from Macs and Windows PCs every 24 hours while it runs, and from FileWave 16.4 also each application’s architecture. Windows update status is reported every hour. A device that is switched off or offline keeps showing its last report, so check when each laptop last reported before trusting the data. License Management can count Apple Apps and Books licences and records you define, but it is not independent legal proof of entitlement. Our [inventory guide](https://www.protechnology.ae/it-asset-inventory-device-software-uae-gcc) explains how to reconcile it with the asset register.

## Remote staff, branch offices and lost laptops

- **Remote staff.** A laptop is managed wherever it can reach the FileWave server, at home, on a client site or abroad. A FileWave-hosted server is reachable from anywhere; a server you host needs an internet-facing address for laptops outside the office.
- **Branch offices.** FileWave Boosters cache Filesets close to Macs and Windows PCs, and Microsoft updates for Windows, so a branch with a slow link downloads them once. Each Mac or Windows Booster supports up to 400 active client connections. Boosters do not serve phones, tablets or Chromebooks.
- **A lost Mac.** FileWave can lock a Mac with a six-digit PIN (Apple silicon Macs need macOS 11.5 or later) and erase it, using Erase All Content and Settings on Apple silicon and T2 Macs with macOS 12 or later. Record the Find My PIN before sending either command.
- **A lost Windows PC.** A remote wipe is available only on PCs enrolled in Windows MDM, not on PCs that run the FileWave Client alone.
- **Any command** runs only when the laptop next connects, and a sent command is not proof that it ran. Disk encryption, FileVault on Macs and BitLocker on Windows, decides how much a lost laptop exposes in the meantime.

## FileWave’s cloud or your own server

FileWave can run on a server FileWave hosts or on your own, on Debian Linux or macOS. FileWave’s hosted servers run on Amazon Web Services; its published maintenance schedule lists regions in the United States, Europe and Asia Pacific, and no Middle East region, so ask which region would host yours if that matters to your procurement. A self-hosted server keeps the server, database and backups where you choose, but it still connects out to Apple, Microsoft, Google and FileWave’s licence server; our [on-premises guide](https://www.protechnology.ae/on-premises-mdm-what-still-connects-out) lists each dependency. For a FileWave-hosted server, Windows MDM needs a hostname you own, verified in your Microsoft Entra tenant.

## What device management does not cover

- **Antivirus and endpoint detection.** FileWave has no built-in antivirus or EDR. It can deploy and keep current the security agent you choose on Macs and Windows PCs.
- **Web and DNS filtering.** These are separate services; FileWave’s own DNS-level protection, cyan Guard 360, is a separate product.
- **Compliance.** Device policies and reports are evidence for an auditor, alongside your policies, agreements and records. They do not make an organisation compliant on their own.
- **Personal devices.** Staff-owned phones are enrolled differently, with limits on what IT can see and erase; see our guide to [enrolling staff-owned phones](https://www.protechnology.ae/byod-phone-enrolment-user-enrollment-work-profile).

## A practical way to evaluate one console for both

1. **Count the fleet.** Macs and Windows PCs by model and operating-system version, who owns them, and which are already in Apple Business or registered for Autopilot.
2. **Check the prerequisites.** An Apple Business account, Microsoft Entra ID P1 or P2 for Windows MDM, and a decision on FileWave’s cloud or your own server.
3. **Choose a small mixed pilot.** A handful of Macs and Windows PCs from different departments, including at least one remote user and one branch-office laptop.
4. **Write success criteria.** For example: a new Mac and a new Windows PC set up without IT touching them; three applications deployed, one of them a Windows installer that needs silent switches; an operating-system update policy applied; a Kiosk install without admin rights; an inventory report you would hand to finance; and a lost-laptop drill.
5. **Run it for two to four weeks**, record what failed and why, and only then size licences, hosting and training for the whole fleet.

PRO TECHnology can discuss a FileWave evaluation with you, set up the pilot, train your FileWave administrators and support the rollout from Dubai. Schools running iPads alongside Macs and Windows PCs should also read our [school device management guide](https://www.protechnology.ae/school-device-management-uae); licences and demonstrations are on the [FileWave page](https://www.protechnology.ae/filewave).

## Frequently asked questions

**Can one tool manage our Macs and Windows PCs together?**

Yes. FileWave manages Macs and Windows PCs in one console, with software as Filesets, a self-service Kiosk, update policy and inventory for both. Each platform still enrols by its own route: Apple Business for Macs, Microsoft Entra ID or the FileWave Client for Windows.

**Do we need Microsoft Intune to use FileWave for Windows?**

No. FileWave’s Windows MDM uses Microsoft Entra ID, which needs Entra ID P1 or P2 or a bundle that includes it, but Microsoft Intune is not required. Windows Autopilot also works with FileWave as the MDM.

**Can Windows Home PCs be managed?**

Not through Windows MDM: Windows Home cannot join through FileWave’s Entra ID workflow. A PC that runs only the FileWave Client still gets software and inventory, but not MDM commands such as a remote wipe.

**Can staff install software without administrator rights?**

Yes, for software IT has approved. The FileWave Kiosk on Macs and Windows PCs lets staff install those applications without being local administrators.

**How are macOS and Windows updates handled?**

macOS updates run through Apple’s declarative device management on macOS 14 and later. Windows updates use Microsoft’s update policy over MDM and FileWave’s Windows patch policy, with update status reported from supported PCs. Third-party applications are updated one by one.

**Can we manage staff who work from home or other countries?**

Yes, as long as their laptops can reach the FileWave server. A FileWave-hosted server is reachable from the internet; a server you host needs an internet-facing address for devices outside your network.

**Is FileWave antivirus or endpoint protection?**

No. FileWave has no built-in antivirus or endpoint detection. It can deploy and keep current the security software you choose on Macs and Windows PCs.

**Can we evaluate FileWave before buying?**

Yes. Ask us to discuss a FileWave evaluation: we agree a small mixed pilot of Macs and Windows PCs, the success criteria and how it will run before any purchase decision.
