# Humanscale chairs compared: Freedom, Liberty, Diffrient Smart, World, Path and Trea, and who each one suits

Published 2 November 2026 · PRO TECHnology Distribution & Retail

Every figure on this page comes from Humanscale's own product pages, configurators and brochures. Where Humanscale's documents disagree, we say so.

**The short answer:** choose **Freedom** for an upholstered back or a headrest that follows the recline, **Liberty** or **Diffrient Smart** for a mesh back with seat-depth adjustment, **World** for a light chair with the lowest seat, **Path** for a knit back, and **Trea** for meeting rooms and shared areas. The task chairs all set the recline from the sitter's body weight, so there is no tension knob to reset when users change; Trea has a solid-state recline instead. PRO TECHnology, a [Humanscale distributor and reseller in Dubai](https://www.protechnology.ae/humanscale-uae), wrote this guide for UAE buyers; we have not run our own tests, so the comparison rests on Humanscale's published specifications and OSHA's workstation guidance.

## Key takeaways

- Freedom is the upholstered chair, and Freedom Headrest is the only model here with a headrest that moves with the recline.
- Liberty and Diffrient Smart are mesh task chairs with seat-depth adjustment; Smart adds an optional 4D armrest and a back designed for automatic lumbar support.
- World has the lowest seat of the group (from 371 mm); World LM is its streamlined edition, 12.2 kg with arms, and the old name World One now refers to it.
- Path (knit back) and Trea (solid-state recline, four base types) are rated to 300 lb (136 kg); Freedom, Liberty, Smart and World are listed up to 400 lb (181 kg).
- Check fit against OSHA's chair guidance (feet flat, a gap behind the knee, lumbar support, at least 15 degrees of recline) before you choose by model name.

## What all Humanscale task chairs have in common

Humanscale says its ergonomic chairs "are designed to use the sitter's own body weight and the laws of physics to encourage movement". In practice the recline adjusts itself: Freedom and Diffrient Smart use a weight-sensitive, self-locking recline, Liberty a counterbalance recline with "no recline locks to set", World and World LM a gravity or weight-compensating mechanism, and Path a Gravity Mechanism that lifts as you lean back. Trea has a 12-degree solid-state recline that needs no adjustment.

Four of the chairs, Freedom, Liberty, Diffrient Smart and World, were designed by Niels Diffrient; Freedom, introduced in 1999, came first. Path and Trea were designed with Todd Bracher. Freedom, Liberty and Smart also come in Ocean versions that use reclaimed ocean plastic.

Names to know: Humanscale now lists Diffrient World as **World**, and the chair once sold as World One as **World LM**. On its Middle East site Liberty is called the Liberty Conference/Task Chair.

Standard cylinders; taller cylinders with a foot ring are offered for some models. *For Diffrient Smart, Humanscale's drawing shows 413 to 521 mm and its configurator text 413 to 579 mm, and the international brochure gives a 45 to 136 kg user range against 400 lb on the US configurator. **Humanscale does not state the reference point for the World LM and Path arm heights. World figures are from the Middle East site; the US configurator gives a seat height of 15.6 to 20.75 inches (about 396 to 527 mm). Confirm critical dimensions in the quotation.

## Model by model: who each chair suits, and its limits

### Freedom and Freedom Headrest

Freedom Headrest. Image and specifications: [Humanscale](https://mena.humanscale.com/products/seating/freedom-headrest-executive-chair).

Freedom suits people who want a cushioned, upholstered back rather than mesh, and who recline often: the backrest pivots, the recline sets itself, and the arms are fixed to the back frame so they stay under the forearms as you lean back. The headrest version is the only chair here with a headrest that moves with the recline, which suits people who lean back to read or take calls.

Limits: the headrest chair stands 1,090 to 1,345 mm tall, so check it clears shelves and partitions in tight offices. If your team prefers mesh, look at Liberty or Diffrient Smart. Humanscale's configurator and brochure give different chair weights, from 17 kg to 22.3 kg depending on the model and document.

### Liberty

Liberty. Image and specifications: [Humanscale](https://mena.humanscale.com/products/seating/liberty-task-office-chair).

Liberty suits offices that want a mesh back, a recline with no locks to set, and seat-depth adjustment (420 to 475 mm). Humanscale's Middle East site lists it as a conference and task chair, so the same model can work at desks and in meeting rooms. The arms attach to the backrest, as on Freedom.

Limits: arm height adjusts only on the adjustable-arm version; fixed arms are also offered. Its lowest seat height, 420 mm, is higher than World's or Path's, which matters for shorter users.

### Diffrient Smart

Diffrient Smart. Image and specifications: [Humanscale](https://mena.humanscale.com/products/seating/diffrient-smart-task-office-chair).

Smart suits people who want a mesh back that Humanscale describes as "engineered to provide automatic lumbar support for every user", and more arm adjustment, with a 4D armrest among the options (World offers one too). The recline is weight-sensitive and self-locking, like Freedom's.

Limits: Humanscale's own documents disagree on its seat-height range and weight rating (see the table note), so check the figures against your users before a large order.

### World and World LM

World. Image and specifications: [Humanscale](https://mena.humanscale.com/products/seating/diffrient-world-task-office-chair).

World suits shorter users and light, minimal workspaces: its seat goes down to 371 mm, the lowest of the chairs here, and it weighs 14 kg with arms on Humanscale's Middle East figures. It can have a mesh or upholstered seat and fixed, adjustable or 4D arms. World LM, "the streamlined edition of the original World", keeps the tri-panel mesh back and weighs 12.2 kg with arms.

Limits: World's highest seat height, 495 mm, is lower than the others, so check it for tall users at standard desks. World LM lists its seat depth as a single figure (416 mm with a mesh seat, 454 mm upholstered) rather than a range.

### Path

Path. Image and specifications: [Humanscale](https://mena.humanscale.com/products/seating/path-task-office-chair).

Path suits people who want neither mesh nor a conventional cushion: its FormSense Eco Knit back "conforms to the body, providing self-adjusted lumbar support". The Gravity Mechanism lifts the chair slightly as you recline so your body weight becomes the counterbalance. Seat depth adjusts from 414 to 475 mm.

Limits: Path is rated to 300 lb (136 kg), lower than the 400 lb listed for Freedom, Liberty, Smart and World.

### Trea

Trea Lite Task. Image and specifications: [Humanscale](https://mena.humanscale.com/products/seating/trea-chair).

Trea suits meeting rooms, touchdown desks and shared areas where one chair design has to work on different bases: four-star, high task, four-leg and cantilever. Its 12-degree solid-state recline needs no adjustment.

Limits: a fixed 470 mm seat depth, no listed arms and a solid-state recline mean fewer adjustments than the task chairs above, and it is rated to 300 lb (136 kg). For long desk days, compare it with Liberty or World.

### And for boardrooms: Summa

[Summa](https://mena.humanscale.com/products/seating/summa-executive-conference-chair) is Humanscale's leather conference chair for executive offices, boardrooms and home offices, with a body-weight recline instead of locks, knobs and springs, a seat height of 394 to 521 mm and a 300 lb rating.

## Checking fit before you order

A chair that fits the person matters more than the model name. The US Occupational Safety and Health Administration's [chair guidance](https://www.osha.gov/etools/computer-workstations/components/chairs) gives a checklist that works for any of these chairs:

1. Seat height: the chair is right when "the entire sole of the foot can rest on the floor" with the back of the knee slightly higher than the seat. Compare the person's needs with the seat-height ranges above; if the seat cannot go low enough, OSHA suggests a footrest such as Humanscale's foot rockers.
2. Seat depth: the user should sit back fully "without contact between the back of the user's knee and the front edge of the seat pan". Freedom, Liberty, Smart, World and Path have a seat-depth range.
3. Lumbar support and recline: OSHA asks for a backrest that supports the lower back and a recline of "at least 15 degrees from the vertical". On Humanscale's figures Freedom (20 degrees), Liberty and Smart (18 degrees plus 8 of back tilt, US figures) and World and World LM (17 plus 8) meet that; Humanscale does not list Path's recline angle, and Trea's 12 degrees is below it.
4. Arms: armrests should support the lower arm and let the upper arm stay close to the body; OSHA notes that armrests that interfere with the desk can be removed or not used. Armless versions exist for most models.
5. Movement: OSHA recommends changing position "frequently throughout the day"; pairing a chair with a [sit-stand product](https://www.protechnology.ae/humanscale-uae#workstation) makes that easier.

For a whole office, group users first (desk-based staff, managers, meeting rooms, shared desks) and choose one model per group. The self-adjusting recline is useful on shared desks because the next person does not have to reset a tension knob.

## Frequently asked questions

**What is the difference between Humanscale Freedom and Liberty?**

Freedom has an upholstered, pivoting back, a weight-sensitive self-locking recline and an optional headrest that follows the recline. Liberty has a form-sensing mesh back and a counterbalance recline with no locks to set. Both have arms attached to the back and adjustable seat depth; both are listed up to 400 lb.

**Which Humanscale chair has a headrest?**

Freedom Headrest, and its Freedom Ocean version. The headrest moves with the recline and adjusts 125 mm in height. None of the other chairs in this comparison lists a headrest.

**Is the Humanscale World One still available?**

Humanscale now sells it as World LM, described as the streamlined edition of the original World. The World One name remains in some page addresses and warranty documents.

**Which Humanscale chair suits a shorter or a taller person?**

Look at the seat-height ranges. World goes lowest, from 371 mm, followed by Path (395 mm) and World LM (397 mm). Among the task chairs, Freedom reaches 535 mm and Liberty and Path 530 mm on standard cylinders (Diffrient Smart's configurator text says 579 mm, its drawing 521 mm). The Trea Lite Task seat goes to 565 mm, and taller cylinders with a foot ring are offered for some models.

**Do Humanscale chairs have adjustable lumbar support?**

Humanscale builds lumbar support into the backrest instead of a separate adjuster: Freedom's backrest pivots, Diffrient Smart's mesh is designed for automatic lumbar support, and Path's knit back provides self-adjusted lumbar support. Check the fit with the user, as OSHA's guidance recommends.

**Which Humanscale chair is rated for the heaviest users?**

Freedom, Liberty, Diffrient Smart and World are listed up to 400 lb (181 kg) on Humanscale's US configurators, and World LM for users of 45 to 181 kg. Path, Trea and Summa are rated to 300 lb (136 kg).
